Is it common for people to automatically get a grant for the following year without having to fill out any forms to the county council/vec? bear in mind, circumstances haven't changed in my household.

Any reply would be great, just curious.

No. the county council will send out a renewal form requesting confirmation that circumstances have not changed.

i.e P21, Social Welfare statement if claiming benefits and copy of exam results to show progression to the next year in college. When this is returned, they will send out a form to be signed and stamped by your college to confirm registration for the new semester.

I got automatic continuation of mine last year. They sent out a letter asking if anything had changed, I don't remember the exact wording, but if circumstances had changed we had to inform them, if not then it carried on.

I can only imagine that this was because we were so below the threshold for income that it would have taken a mini-miracle for us to be above it a year later.

All I had to do was get SAA in the college to sign a form confirming my attendance in September/October and send it back to draw down payment.

Not sure how common this is, but that's what happened me last year, haven't heard anything from them yet this year.

EDIT: It just so happens that I have the letter I got here, which was sent out in the middle of July last year:
Student grants awarded under the student grant scheme are subject to reviews each year. However, I am pleased to inform you that your grant has been deemed NON-REVIEWABLE.

Therefore, your grant will be paid automatically for the academic year 2011/12 provided you continue to comply with the terms set out by the relevant Higher Education Grant Authority (see notes attached*)

So in short, it may not be common, but it does happen.

*The notes basically set out a number of questions such as:
    • Are you changing course/faculty/college?
    • Are you repeating the upcoming academic year?
    • Are you taking a year out?
    • etc...
