How many of you would role-play in a game?

    Hello all,

I help run a game called Midway that a few of you are probably aware of. We play in Red Barn every month and it's a post apocalyptic live action role-play (LARP) game with rules for things like skill progression, first aid, farming, trading etc.

This weekend we played an overnighter game in The Compound in Gibbstown in Meath and we ran it as a sort of "away" game for the characters of Midway. I don't know how many of you have been to The Compound, but it's fking huge! Amazing site with an almost infinite potential. We had less than 30 players and it was a real shame we couldn't make more of it, so I was wondering if there were people here who'd be interested in a more character focused sort of game that goes beyond Milsim.

I know there was a LARP element at the last Rionegro (some of our team were playing) and I believe they're planning on having it again this year.

Mainly I'm asking because we've got another overnight game penned in for September but at the same time, we're always looking for more players for our regular monthly game in Red Barn too (cause that's also a big site that we'd love to make more use of) :) It's a pretty open game in terms of what you might want to do or what sort of character you'd like to play.

I'd be in, I did a few NPC cameos for Nick. Would be glad to get back into it.

Yea, seemed like you were well into the swing of things when you were out before, you'd be welcome back any Friday evening if you fancied it, maybe we'll roll up a character for you :)

We had some larp roles last Rionegro (and are currently looking to fill a few slots for the upcoming one) and I have to say that it's a pretty big logical leap for your average airsofter. A milsim player (especially one into the more complex end of the spectrum) would probably find it an interesting experience to go along and give it a try though.

Note: the author of this post is a larper and player of Midway

I wouldn't mind getting into this, but wouldn't know where to start. Never done anything like it before really.

You should try getting in touch with team at midwaylrp dot com.

Just tell them you're an airsofter and you'd like to check Midway out, could you come along and play NPCs for a game. It's the easiest way to get an intro to what larp is about.

    Excellent :D

Yea, as Stonewolf said above, team[at]midwaylrp.com sends an email to all of us on the crew and we'll help you from there and explain about making a character. The rules are also available here to give you a look at what's involved.

Always wanted to give Midway a go. Seems like good craic. :)

Work always gets in the way though. I barely even get airsofting anymore. *sheds tear*

Will try and pop down some stage next month, maybe play as an NPC.

If you want to dip your toe into LARPing before taking the dive into the MidWay world, we have decided that LARPers at this year's Rionegro Game can attend for free. I can give details over on the Rionegro thread or if people PM me.

I'm not mad into the LARP stuff, but have to say, having LARP in a game makes a world of difference. Its immersive and presents you with decisions and social interactions you just dont normally get in a game.

    Massive thumbs up from me!

We really prefer that people actually create a character for their first run at the game because as an NPC you'll be exposed to plot related stuff that would definitely be considered spoilers. We've got a whole pile of suggestions for characters for people to try out.

I'm giving some serious thought to Rionegro now myself, by all accounts it promises to be a really fun weekend.

We have a few LARP players signed up now. The intention is to weave them into the overall game, rather than have them as targets that don#t shoot back :-)

I can't promise the same level of detail for every character, but I just agreed a 1400 word role description with one guy. Though to be fair 3/4 of that was cut and paste from the Rionegro Game Canon document (we do have one you know).

Can't make Rionegro this weekend, I hope everyone there has a good time, looks like it'll be an excellent weekend's fun.

For anyone interested, Midway happens this day week (Friday 24th) in Red Barn Airsoft. We've got a bus from the city centre if anyone wants transport - PM me for details :)

I think larping can be fun in airsoft, but to a degree.
Mate of mine went to a milsim where they had a checkpoint and had to stop people from passing, and had to follow rules of engagement(I have NO IDEA what these are personally, but they did include not being able to fire unless fired upon). I think in a situation like that, larping is great fun, I mean, if you have 8 lads in front of you, and you can't shoot them unless they aim at you, it tends to make you a bit nervous I guess ;):D I think sites should maybe offer minor larping, nothing story wise since some might not like it, plus, I don't need to know why I shouldn't shoot that guy, just need to know not too  , but just something like, "Rescue said person and evac" or " 'Assassinate' the target and confirm it(something like after hitting the guy, medic him to confirm.) could be fun
I wouldn't have the patience for actual larping, but if incorporated into the game, it can be fun.

Funny you should mention LARPing and checkpoints. We had an incident at the Rionegro game yesterday which will never be forgotten by anyone involved. A heavily armed section were holding a check point fitted out with barricades, watch towers and Czech hedgehogs, when 20 local villagers turned up protesting with placards and foam "bricks".

I slipped into marshal mode and ignored questions from the players at the check point on "what should we do" (why ask me, I am just a marshal?)

What happened next was videoed and if the reporter's camera wasn't destroyed it will make compelling viewing.

But it was great in that by using LARP players (even if most of them were ARM cartel players the rest of the weekend) we put the players into a totally different situation and it was interesting to see how they reacted to that.

It makes for great games when we can send people away afterwards with totally unusual experiences like that.

Some of the larping really set the tone for the weekend and having character driven players as well as objective driven scenario's really adds to game and I think the video footage will be fantastic.

I should politely note that we are a militia and not a "cartel" ;)

Also the marks on my face are testament to exactly how some players react when confronted with something new....panic and shoot, not that I'm complaining.

I do think that Sliabh unexpectedly shooting me on the nipple was a tad excessive though, it's not my fault his driver slipped and accidentally fell on to a bullet, or was it a knife(especially when it wasn't my bullet or knife).

Yeah, that sort of game is always fun :D If larping is used like that, I think it can make the games much more interesting and fun, and even allow for me 'tactics'.
Larping tends to allow use of more objectives and rules, and that's where I feel it can really be put into airsoft.
I wouldn't be sure about full larping in a game, I guess it could mean the situation would be ever-changing, I mean, you put 3-4 teams in an enclosed space, each with their own goals, it's hard to predict how things will turn out :p;)
I do think it's something sites should give time too, even just give it a shot and see the reactions.
