My girlfriend and I were out ring shopping at the weekend and has her heart set on ring...it's an emerald cut with a colour E clarification vs1 ggod cut apparently and igi certified.....my main worry is that you can see through the cut (her skin on her finger is visible when the ring is on) anybody tell me if this is the norm or is the cut a bad one...I am new to diamonds so I know very little...thanks in advance...will post a pic later

Go into the Jewelers and ask them to explain it to you. That's what I did.
    This might help.

Thanks for your replies so far folks....i have attached picture which is below to give you an idea of what i am on about.....just not 100% on if you are supposed to be able to see right through the centre of the stone....

if you look at images of emerald cut diamonds some seem to be cut ''flatter'' on the bottom of the stone, others seem to be cut with more facets on the bottom [i'm not explaining that well but if you google you'll see what i mean]. to me, it's a matter of personal taste really. does your other half like it and the way it looks on her finger? the ring itself wouldn't be my taste, but i will say it's a gorgeous setting, i like the metal being visible either side of the shoulder stones. and if that's her finger, it does suits her!

its her finger alright:) taken a fair few of these in the last few days. I do know what you mean about the flatter cut but from what i have seen and just like you mentioned the "emerald" cut seems to be tapered which wouldn't allow you to see through the centre. As you probably well know it is allot of expense and I just want it to be right......many thanks for your opinion

Hello there. Only one piece of advice here: don't touch with a yardstick! :) It's that bad that it's not too clear to me what the cut is supposed to be, radiant or criss-cut? Very odd and unusual antique cushion? Either way, it's a disaster, your finger shouldn't be evident at all (or at least, only a little and not all in one lump). Whoever is trying to make you pay actual money for this needs to be outed somewhere.

For technical armor, the base of the stone has been cut far too shallow (i.e. they likely started with a stingy flat piece of rough and did their best) -- creating a situation where light isn't being contained within the stone and is 'leaking out' and onto your GF's finger, which is why you see it (i.e. the stone acts more like a window and not a mirror at that point). HTH and good luck with the rest of your transactions.

I wont name the place out of politeness but needless to say i wont be going back. It really set the alarm bells off when I had a proper look at the picture, something didnt seem right. Anyhow we purchased a different ring today and am very pleased. So now let the fun begin:) Thanks for your opinions folks, much appreciated.......

[QUOTE=Intothesea; Very odd and unusual antique cushion? [/QUOTE]

ps it wasnt a cushion:) her fingers were at the edge of the table and what you might think was a cushion was in fact the carpet:) sinn e
