Worth keeping up dealer service?

Have a 6 year old VW from new that has been serviced by main dealer. Wondering if it's worth keeping up the main dealer servicing or does it make any difference to value at this stage. Car probably worth about 6k.

    No advantage in my opinion.

It will make a small difference to resale value. Shop around for servicing prices, I might pay a little more for a main dealer stamp.

While in warranty there is an argument for it to retain good will should you have problems down the line.

Outside no real need, having said that some main dealers have some pretty good deals on servicing so don't discount them out of hand.

Wont make any difference, find a good indy garage and make sure he stamps the book and records everything he does so you will still have a full recorded service history

Of course I will, but if a dealer service is only a couple of quid extra then i'd pay it for the stamp. On anything but routine maintenance work i'd favour a good indy.

I would get prices from both a dealer and an independent.

Despite the idea that dealers are more expensive it is not always the case, especially with the amount of servicing deals on offer at the moment. Just make sure the work being done covers what is required.

If i was buying a car (that was most likely a performance car of some sort or fashion) and i found 2 pretty identical examples in terms of year/spec and cost and one had a book of main dealer stamps (serviced most likely by a different joe soap every time with varying levels of interest in my car or me) and the other had book full of stamps from a reputable indy garage i would choose the later,in fact even if the main dealer one was slightly cheaper or a better bargain i'd still probably punt for the later.

Personally i get all the work done on my cars by a reputable indy (he's a member on here),i avoid main dealers at all costs and cost is not the reason.

I might too, but most wouldn't. Which is why, in answer to the OP's question, the car with the main dealer stamps will still be worth a bit more. A bit like the car with Dublin plates.

As someone mentioned main dealers have dropped their prices substantially over the past couple of years. Maybe get the main dealer to do oil change with filters and any additional work get a good indy to do it. That way you maintain your main dealer service history but save on the higher labour charges for any additional work needed at the time.

Main VW dealer service work comes with 2 year warranties also. Worth getting timing belts etc done by them......

    Edit see below

    http://www.volkswagen.ie/en/service/offers/ultimate-service.html

You get any s/w updates that your indy wont be able to do + a years breakdown thrown in.

I often toyed with the idea of indie service for my 5 year old motor. But I figured that for the few extra euros was worth it for the latest software updates and also maindealer service guys are familiar with my type of car.

2 months ago my engine developed a major problem. It was fixed as a goodwill gesture. New short engine and rebuild. I only got it under goodwill because I had a full maindealer service
