Asus A53SV power port loose?

    Hi folks,

My Asus A53SV-XN1 has started getting picky with charging. It charges when the cable is forcefully held in, or looped in certain ways and pinned under the laptop, to keep directional pressure on the port. I've held the charger in and wiggled the cable about, and it stayed charging fine, so I'm pretty sure it's just the port that has come unsoldered from the motherboard.

Any ideas how much this would cost to get repaired? My flatmate is pretty good at soldering, so I might just take it apart and let him try first. Warranty expired 11 days ago so I haven't too much to lose.

    Cheers

It may not be soldered on. I recently changed the jack on a different recent Asus model, it was a short cable that plugged onto the motherboard with a little 4-way plug, visible in the RAM compartment. I couldn't find one for your model on ebay, I paid about 18.50.

Your model may differ though, and complete disassembly will probably be required. I had no problems with the one I did.

[edit] The cable I got is here for comparison.

The K53 cosmetically looks almost identical to mine - I'll have a look this evening and see if there is a similar cable in the ram slot.
Was the problem that one of the wires on this cable was broken?
The port was never a concrete-solid connection, there was always a little bit of wobble, so I think that you might be right.

    Thanks

The one I changed had been dropped and had similar symptoms to yours. It is someone else's laptop, I just changed the cable. The vendor in the ebay link has several other cables for Asus models as well.

Had the laptop apart this evening, my power jack is a soldered on job. Nothing looks to be amiss with it - all solder points look good and the pins all seem to connect when the charger is plugged in. I think I'll order a new charger and try that - if that fails, solder on a new power jack. Hope that isn't the case though.

    Edit:
Tried another power supply, wrong amperage but right voltage. It did the same thing, wobbling the cable would connect and drop power. Guess the power jack is actually broken rather than just unsoldered, will have to order a new one and stick that on.
