Do I own my Sky box?

I joined Sky last October so I have about 3 months left on my 12 month contract. I live in an apartment complex and I have Sky through a communal dish on the roof, I don't have my own satellite dish.

When my contract is up, do I own my Sky+ HD box? Can I keep it if I move apartments? There's a good chance if I move that I will want Sky in my new place anyway but it would be nice to hold onto the same box as I have a few programmes recorded on it that I'd like to keep.

The Sky box is yours after the contract period is up.

    No, it's the customer's from day 1.

If you stop paying subscription inside the contract period they will pursue for cash settlement.

The Sky+ functions [Pause Live TV, rewind, etc] will not work without Sky subscription. However, it will still allow you to watch the free channels.

The box is yours as soon as you take out a subscription,Sky 'sell' you the box as part of your sub. They take the hit on the price of the box but recoup it in the cost of the sub eventually. As Watty stated,if you break your contract (within the first 12 months) you can be liable to pay the remainder of what's owed & the cost of the equipment.

UPC rent you their boxes so you never own them.If you cancel with UPC you have to return the equipment, with Sky you keep it.

Sky do a free house move, ring them about a fortnight before you move & they'll install the box at your new address, they'll put up a dish if needs be also.

Thats all well and good guys but for the ordinary person asking a question like the OP then its not the correct answer to give. The box is only yours if you make 12 monthly payments so effectively it doesnt belong to you until you either pay the 12 monthly amounts or buy it by paying the full amount stated in the contract.

Buying a car on HP is pretty much the same thing. Legally its yours but you cant do anything with it until all money has been paid. Same thing with a mortgage on a house.

If what you say is correct then I don't understand how they could demand the cost of the equipment if the subscriber owns it.

99% of people follow the terms of their contract but some get Sky installed & never even pay the first bill, these are the ones that Sky pursue for the cost of equipment.I know this from personal experience as a certain demographic;) got Sky installed with the intention of using the boxes for FTA as soon as Sky cut them off for not paying the bill, the new HD boxes with the crippled EPG and the refusal to accept prepaid credit cards have made this practice less attractive to those wanting to try it.
Sky generally don't bother to reclaim the equipment or the value of it but have been known to threaten this depending on circumstances along with the cost of the amount due in unpaid subs.As an example if you just had it installed but refused to pay your sub they may try to reclaim the equipment or cost of it,if you have paid for the most of the minimum term then they will just look for the outstanding cost of subs to be paid & will leave the box with you.

This won't affect the op in any way as I stated that Sky will move his box for free.

    From Sky's website:
*Standard installations for a Home Move are free, and this is the case for the majority of our customers. Non-standard Home Move installations may cost extra and will be established by our engineer on the day of the visit.
