Unless there is a recovery partition with an image of the original install there maybe no way of doing a factory reset.

    Try this

    Hello,
I had to restore my Emachine. I have Windows Vista
    (1) Go to start menu
    (2) Click on all programs
    (3) click on Emachine
    (4) click on Emachine recovery management
    (5) Click on restore on the bar across the top
    (6) click on restore to system factory default

Get a Vista disc and boot to the disc, when you get to the install screen there is an option to repair the installation. Try this option first.

Just a question...did you get this error by any chance before the system restarted ? Failure configuring Windows updates. Reverting changes. Do not turn off your computer.

I don't know why it tried to update as it never had in Internet connection after the last time it was restored because the wifi key for the router wouldn't work.

Restart the computer and keep pressing f12 and see will it give you an option of Recovery on drive D.

Yeah, windows update icon can do this even without a connection, it's just a bit flustered. OK i think you need to hit F10 for recovery on emachine. the recovery option should be there or F12 so try both.

Even with F10 ?. if it does not show recovery in either safe-mode or F10-F12 then the system drive was fully reformatted before. Usually there is a drive D back-up of your operating system when you purchase it so if you think the system was never fully formatted before then the recovery partition is in there.
If no go with F10--F12 for a recovery then you need the operating disc to fix this.

    Try this...

Right at the begining of the power-up process for just a short while, an "emachine" screen appears plus a choice of using some function keys. As soon as this screen appears (you have to be fast and ready as the time window is very small) press [Alt] + F10 (hold down the Alt key and keep pressing and releasing the F10 key) continuously until a screen comes up giving you the choice to factory restore. Just take the option to restore the operating system. Hope that helps.

When I press F10 this comes up

    Edit Boot options
Edit boot options for : Microsoft windows vista

    Path: \windows\ system32\winload.exe

    Partition: 2
    Hard Disk : 96feal09

    [ /NOEXECUTE=OPTIN

no luck keeps going to the update screen ..
not worth buying a disk . The comp is not needed wouldnt be of use with the small amount of ram .Just though I'd give it a shot as its headed towards the skip .
    Thanks anyway :-)

well the last thing you could try is this... try and go into safemode and click safemode with command prompt. type in CHKDSK /F (there is a space between the chkdsk and forward slash...) see if it works.

You need the operating system disc i'm afraid as that will fix your problem straight away i'm sure. If you get one, just stick it in and restart the pc and constantly press the F12 key until you reach the option screen, choose boot from optical drive and reinstall the operating system from there. If you have important files on the pc you should have already had them backed up ? if not don't continue and seek help in retrieving the files before you go any further. You need the operating disc anyway.

There's some geniuses on pc repair on boards so i'd say it will be narrowed down by tomorrow if they want to help.

Ok you will need access to another computer to download and create a Vista disc. Doing this should repair your computer.
Follow these intructions from dell to create a clean Vista disc from the Microsoft official software for free. (A Windows 7 disc should also work)

Then follow the above as suggested earlier.

If this fails then you will need to do a complete install and then recover the system defaults after this (another install)
Make sure you select the C drive when doing an install and do not delete or over write the recovery partition.
Vista and Windows 7 normally back up the old installation at C:\windows.old and you should be able to recover any files after the install.
Be careful as the C:\windows.old back-up is not created when doing a factory reset.

Here is the link to the windows 7 home premium .iso
It will be easier to just burn this to a DVD using imgburn than creating the vista iso and burning.
