I just ran through the forum and found a couple of recommendation that are no longer free.

Had my laptop stolen a few months ago and want to put all the tracks from my ipod to my new laptop. It seems I need 3rd party software to do so but I have now downloaded idump (as recommended here which is no longer free), Phone to PC and Mediawidget (all are 100% free until I want to use them).

I'm running windows 7 and its a 1st gen ipod. Recommendations would be much appreciated.

    Thanks

I've got a free and easy way to do this.

    1. Normally, Windows hides sensitive files. Your tracks on your iPod are hidden. Open Windows Explorer, click Organise/folder and search settings/show hidden files.

    2. Go to computer, click on your ipod, right click ipod control folder which is now visible, UNclick read-only. This will take a minute to do.

    3. Open iTunes, import folder, click on ipod control.

p.s. your tracks have encrypted names, only iTunes decodes them correctly, so if you use any other program than iTunes to get your tracks this way, usually, the names look like this: XMEL, KISE etc. complete garbage. iTunes de-scrambles it to the proper name.

Itunes doesn't actually encrypt anything, it just reads the contents of the id tags embedded in the MP3 file. You could use something like MP3tag to do a "Tags to Filename" conversion, or easier Sharepod will do it all for you :)

So how do the file names change? Ask Windows Media Player or most other programs to import the files, or view them within iPod Control and you will see encrypted names. I'm sure I read more about that encryption before too.

I don't like Sharepod I'm afraid. I like software that helps remove these problems but I've been using the iPod Control folder for years and it's all done with one program - iTunes, no need for further installations.

I've no clue, although if you add the artist and song title fields to the explorer window you will see the info itunes reads. They may have changed it now (been a while since I had an ipod) to read the data from a library file, although I would think it would be easier for the idevice to just read the mp3 tags. I would say more Obfuscation than encryption as it is not a DRM scheme. Although it is clearly used to make copying music off the device more difficult for a novice user.
