I used motorcheck before buying my Passat as from searches here they came recommended. I think there's a user motorcheck here who helps people out should they need it.

Can't comment on any of their inspections, do you use a mechanic you trust that would check for you?

I've used the same mechanic for about 3 years now, But still don't know him that well to ask him to take time out and inspect a car.

Don't even know if he does that type of thing.

Well, you'll be paying him to do it, no harm in asking!

I always use AA for any car.

Last time was 3 weeks back.

Prices might seem high but it is worth it for total peace of mind.

Also, if you have AA breakdown cover, you get a discount on The car inspection and you are also entitled to 1 free car Data check too.

I paid €280. Think the original cost if not a member is something like €330+

When you ring to book the inspection, ask them for the code for the free data check.

I bought a Slk three weeks ago and Brian the AA mechanic spent a good three hours with the car. Checked EVERYTHING. Called me and told me everything about the car including little niggly things like a slight problem with the cup holder and sun visor light.

He emailed me the report the next day and followed up with a report in the post a few days later.

I wouldn't hesitate in using them again. Have used them for my last 4 cars after getting stung in the past. Peace of mind especially if spending €000's

The AA will want use of the dealers ramp and also require to take the car for a good test drive without the dealer. Some dealers may object but if there's nothing wrong with the car, there is no reason for objection.....

    Good luck.

Thanks for reply Limbo. sounds comprehensive. In regard to the RAMP - What about if buying private and there will be no ramp available or if the dealer dosent actually have a ramp.

in regard to the free data check, on whose website is this used on ? aa, cartell, motorcheck ?

I think they will insist on car ramp. If not, they have a garage in Dublin that the car can be brought to if seller doesn't mind.

The data check was performed c/o Cartell.

    Hope the info helps..........

If one is importing a car from the UK and wants to do a check on a UK car -- Is it best to check this via a UK website or does the Irish ones do the same job ?

Dont use the irish car check sites. You will be wasting your money as it is an entirely different database.

On a UK car, you want a UK car check.

    www.theaa.com/car-data-checks/

    www.rac.co.uk/car_data_check

    www.cardatachecks.co.uk/

    ................... to name a few.

Which of the uk websites is best ?

Personally, I'd stick with the big boys. AA or RAC.

Im not advertising AA. Its just coming from the UK, its a trusted brand I have always used and they have never let me down.

When I googled car data checks, loads of companies appeared. Some, Ive never even heard of.

What type of motor are you looking at and where in the UK?

Again, not endorsing but have you tried www.cargiant.co.uk ?

You will never seen such a vast range of cars - all makes and models. The site is massive. Will take you a day to walk around. All makes grouped together too so it makes it easier if you are after a particular make/model. Have used them before and the car was sound. I know of others who have used them, again, no problems to report.

You wont be able to bargain with them so much as the cars are already some of the cheapest around.

All I'd advise is - avoid going on weekends. The place is manic both Saturdays and Sundays!

    AND.......

If you are going, dont go with a big wad of cash on your own. Its a right moody part of west London . (Think Dublin is bad in places...... think again)

    bbbbrrrrrrrrpppppp

    Thanks Limbo

Ran a report via AA UK and it came back with :

" VRM and VIN currently recorded as having outstanding finance "

But then underneath that, it had :

" If you are buying from a dealer, you may come across this type of finance on your HPI report. Talk it over with your dealer, check their liability and get confirmation in writing that they will clear the finance on the car you are buying. Unit Stocking is a common type of finance agreement used by motor dealers to enable them to fund the vehicles on their forecourt. "

This particular car is from a dealer so maybe that has something to do with it.........

I've had this before on a car data check. Contacted the garage and I was assured it was something like the reason above regarding stocking. As it was a major nationwide dealership, I accepted their reason knowing if there were any comebacks, they would be coming back to the dealer :D

Once the car was transferred over to me, they gave me a further data check showing nill finance.

I wouldn't necessarily trust a back street garage if a report came back as finance owing. And I definitely would run the other way if it's a private sale.....

    thanks Limbo.
Yeah, this is also from a main dealer in the UK

I had the same buying a BMW from a uk BMW dealer. There was finance showing which they cleared when I purchased the car.

That would be normal enough I believe.
