Mixing sprockets on a cassette

Currently running a 13-28 cassette, and would like to widen the range to 11-28. Reading the campag bumf, if I attempt to do this I'm going against some unwritten law of nature and will surely die a slow, gruesome and very painful death. Is this a load of hokum or is there some good reason you shouldn't mix and match your own cassettes? I'm on a long cage derailleur so there's no issue there.

I think you should be grand. I presume you already have an 11 tooth? Also, I would imagine a 13-28 will be very gappy but I don't think that's really as much of a problem as some people make out, especially if you're not racing.

I did it with a campag 13- 26,added an 11 sprocket. As long as you replace the spacers in proper order everything is fine. The novelty wore off the 11 sprocket (O.K, I realised I'm a weakling...) and I went back to 13-26.

Yeah, I'll probably find the same. There's a few descents I'm spinning out on, but given I don't race I hardly need the speed. Might try it out for and see how I get on. Probably should work a bit more on my cadence.

I moved from an 11-28 MTB cassette to 13-28 specifically to get closer ratios. I actually hacked a 13-25 cassette by replacing the two biggest sprockets with the 24 and 28 from my 11-28. There was no way I would spin out on 52x11 and, if you're spinning out on a 13t you probably shouldn't be pedalling...

Your 52x11 (9.5 gain) is actually quite a bit higher than my 53x13 (8.2 gain), in fact even a compact on 50x11 is still way higher (9.2). The gain difference between 13t and 11t is a whopping 18.2%, whereas at the front 50t to 53t represents just 6%.

Doesn't mean I need it of course, just that I think I need it.
