ASUS Wireless device won't come on

I have a 3 year old ASUS F5 PR050 and the wireless has stopped working. THere is a toggle switch on the left hand side of the laptop and earlier today I switched it to off. However, when I switched it back on again it failed to come on. Instead I got the same message flashing on screen that normally comes on when I switch it off "Wireless LAN Off". Usually when I switch it to on I get "Wireless LAN On". So now no matter which way I put the switch it turns it off.

I have rebooted the system and reinstalled the driver for the Wireless device but to no avail.

I'm currently connected to the internet via an ethernet cable.

To rule out faulty hardware, try a Linux Live CD.

I'm sorry but I'm not quite sure what you mean by this. I have tried loading Ubuntu onto my laptop before but there was some problem with the chipset and it wouldn't install.

I don't mean to install Linux, just boot from a Live CD of any recent distro and check if wireless is working, they all support the most common hardware. Knoppix, for example, has a reputation for excellent hardware detection.

I was able to get it working again by using the Fn+F2 keyboard combination. Very strange since I've never had to use this before.

Fn key combo and a physical switch? That's quite unusual.

I bought it in New Zealand-perhaps it's a feature that is included in that market
