    Hi folks,

I was wondering if I travel outside the EU, to china to work for a year or for two years and return will I be able to claim social welfare if I need to. I have been working for 16 years so don't want to mess up any entitlements and be worse off.

    Paul.

If you are going for two years you will be coming back in 2014 so therefore you contribution year (gcy)when you return will be 2012. . If you are going for 1 year your gcy will be 2011. This is assuming you are paying an "a" class contribution and are not self-employed. If self-employed you will be means tested for jobseekers allowance.

I got you! So this year 2012 I would have worked from January to August and in 2011 I got the full year working.

So 1 year no worries and if I cam back in 2014 then I need to check if my I have enough A class stamps for this year.

    Thanks!!:)

You would still qualify for jsb as 2011 and 2012 can be used together if you have 26 paid in both years which appears to be the case.
