Republic of Ireland 1-4 Yugoslavia (1955)
On a crisp October morning in 1951, the gardener at the People's Park in Dun Laoghaire, Dublin, turned up for work to witness a large truck wheelspinning hysterically out of the gates. Upon further investigation, the reason for the articulated pantechnicon's speedy departure became clear: its drivers had made off with an 18-foot, three-ton bronze statue from the grounds.

BTW I believe that Catholic priest may have co-operated with the Fascist regieme in Croatia during WW2 and the Yugoslavs has offered to deport him from reading about it in the past.

    What?

Bizarrely enough Yugoslavia did alot better as a "Godless" country until the 80s and 90s when its people re found religion and proceded to shoot each other to pieces on its merits.

That McQuaid was one evil sh1t either way.

The tone was set for a fortnight of farce. Tottenham's Chris Hughton turned up at the airport only to find the FAI had forgotten to buy him a ticket. (Just picture that happening to Roy Keane.)

    :pac:

Ah jesus, I thought I had heard all the FAI old school stories by now and yet there is always one more

I have a ticket stub from Ireland Yugoslavia in 1999, the first ever international match I went to.

As do I. I went to every home game from 1995 to 2001.

Pretty sure that at least one high-ranking member of the Ustase hid out in Ireland in a monastery or something on the way to the Americas.

I think that team was better than the one we have now, despite missing out on qualification.

Saw this when it came out originally. GITC Documentary covered it as well.

It's stories like this which make you realise what a priest-ridden sh*thole this country was back then. No wonder most of my elder relatives fcuked off outta here when they had the chance.

It was much younger but potential was there, we had a much better manager back then too..actually allowed us play a bit. Mick did a great job, he was well on his way to rebuilding that team at that stage. Nxt campaign we qualified.
