hi all. my reference isnt to a classic car, but i thought you guys might know about it.

I'm looking at purchasing a vehicle that was bought into Ireland by a company, as a work vehicle.

It was never on the roads, only ever used on site. was never taxed, tested etc.
    There's no paperwork with it.

It is roadworthy, its a modern vehicle (1999)

is there a way i can go about registering it?

It should be possible to register the vehicle. Would suggest calling into the local vehicle licensing office.

sounds like you'd have to pay the VRT... it's highly irregular as even off-road vehicles (such as Airside vehicles at the Airport) , have to be registered I thought

It is certainly an interesting situation, will watch for outcome.

You will find information on VRT here http://www.vrt.ie/vrtInDetailIndex.php

The VRT Application form is here http://www.ncts.ie/pdf/VRTFormFinal%20Version.pdf

Because you have no paperwork for it I think that you will have to source an "EU Whole Vehicle Type Approval Certificate of Conformity" for the particular Make and Model for the car. You might have to go to a main dealer.

    http://www.vrt.ie/vrtDetail.php?page=11

You will also need an invoice containing the purchase price and date of purchase.
I think it would be handy to have a letter from the seller explaining that it was never on the roads, only ever used on site. was never taxed, tested etc.
As long as you buy it from a reputable company then I doubt you will have any problem getting a cert for it.

Ah, go on -tell us! :D

About 15 years back I bought an Enduro prepped DR350 from some lad out Ashbourne direction. Sold the bike a few years later and the buyer insisted the bike be registered because he wanted to insure it to ride from his own house up to the entrance to a mountain fire road. Details are vague now but I had to contact Suzuki Ireland who contacted Suzuki Japan to get some code from them. Wasn't the chassis number obviously because that was on the bike - as I say details are sketchy at this stage. Anyhow, got this 'code' and went to VRT office with same and they gave me a reg number for the bike.

Hope that helps but doubt it will really! :o

Price should reflect the extra hassle.

Lots of potential problems here from what I can see ....

    A) You're gonna need a COC ( Cert of conformity) from the manufacturer before you can reg it,

    B) If it's never been reged before then you wont be able to register it as a new car i.e 2012 today because it wont conform to Euro 5 emission regulations.I'd say the best you'll get is a 1999 plate as in the year the car was made. Not sure on this though.

    C) Lastly, and this is a biggy, if it is a brand new car that's never turned a wheel then the Revenue will see it as such and charge you VRT as such. In other words you'll be charged VRT on its new OMSP. You could have a mega VRT bill for a car worth very little.

    My two censt anyway.
