Focus engine malfunction light

Hi, I have a 2008 Ford Focus 1.6 Tdci, when I was leaving the garage yesterday after filling up the red engine malfunction light came on on the dash.
The car is driving perfect, no limp mode or funny engine noises.
A mate has an OBD scanner and it showed no fault codes when attached.
I disconnected the battery for a while but the warning light and alarm came back after starting.
I am hoping it is something simple but am a bit concerned that it might be something more serious.
Would appreciate any feedback as I don't want to bring it to a main Ford dealer.
Edit: I got the car remapped around 4 months ago.

You will have to get it scanned with something better than a basic OBD reader. That means going to either an independent garage with the correct diagnostic tools or failing that a Ford dealer.

Did you check oil , could be air flow sensor but as otherposter said get checked with proper equipment

Thanks for the replies guys, getting the car properly diagnosed on Wednesday, will post results.

Well I got the car diagnosed in a certain Ford garage in Clondalkin, €40, which is reasonable I thought.
Turns out the DPF additive tank is empty and the fluid to fill it costs €275! Plus labour!
I am probably going to get the DPF removed completely so either way it's going to cost.
There's a lot to be said for older diesel engines.

€275 is a crazy price to have the fluid refilled. Shop around and you will get it done for far less than that.

As George said €275 is a crazy price for this additive fluid..
Not sure what the capacity of the ford focus 1.6 tdci additive tank is but i would think 3 litres should do it.
You could get an independent garage to top it up and with any good level diagnostic equipment they should be able to reset they additive system also.
It would be better if they did this before because its expensive stuff.

I know a few owners who have used this...

You could also get it from peugeot/citroen as they usually charge around 120-130 for 3 litres of this additive fluid.
You should get the whle job done for €275-300...:)

I recently topped up my fuel additive tank, like the op said ford were quoting crazy money, did my research and you can get the same stuff of a volvo dealer with the kit for doing it for 105 Euro, no labour because I tackled it myself, its a fairly straight forward job (be sure to wear gloves), for anyone interested the tank is located by the fuel tank near the rear axle beam, a small 2.5 litre tank. Thats on an 06 1.6 tdci focus.

Diagnostics, luckily enough a buddy of mine is a mechanic with decent diagnostics, otherwise about 50 euro for a ford dealer to do it...

So the car has a tank which periodically requires refilling, but has no gauge, and the only way to find out is by paying e40+ to a garage to run a diagnostic check? That sounds bloody insane or am I missing something? And that's before handing over e275 to refill said tank.

Ford say to do it as part of the 75k mile/ 120k km service, thats about the everage life of a DPF, all depends on the driving the car is doing though...

275+ labor the op was quoted after paying e40 for diagnosis.

That "Engine Malfunction" warning popped up on my 2010 1.4l diesel saloon earlier. Drove it work this morning, putting in some diesel on the way, and drove her home with no warning signal. Went into town afterwards and it was displaying, although the car was driving perfect from what I could gather.

I only got it on Saturday, so not familiar with it yet, and I wouldn't have a clue about cars in general. I do have an uncle as a mechanic that I will ring in the morning, but is there anything I can do in the mean-time to reset the message or whatever?

Check temperatures, fluid levels, condition of pipes/hoses in engine to see there's no obvious fault. Without a fault reader it could literally be anything, resetting it will just make is disappear, fault will likely be back again shortly after.
