    Hi all,

whats a Thesis all about ?

Does it or can it determine he final degree grade ? Rgerading this can my grade be improved or dismprove because of a thesis ?

I know that depending on what course oen does a thesis requires an experiment or insight into one area of disciplne, can the student pick whatever topic to work one ?

    thanks

First, is this an undergrad or a masters thesis we are talking about?

A thesis is kind of like an essay, but you have to conduct research in order to write it. You start with a hypothesis, which you test scientifically, and then you write about and interpret your results.

An undergrad thesis wouldn't have to contain very original research, while for a masters thesis you really are supposed to research during the summer months and have a thesis finished by late august (typically it would be between 50-100 pages, but it depends on the field).

Also, as part of this, you spend a lot of time in the beginning with your literature review, meaning you read scientific journals related to the area your thesis is about.

Yes, it affects your grade. From what I understand, at most programs the thesis makes up 1/3 of your final grade. And you have to pass it, or you won't get a degree. This is for masters degree programs of course.

Talk to whoever's the head of the thesis module they'll tell you what it's all about.
The amount that it reflects your grade it proportional to the credit weighting
    from thesis to other modules.

Its an economic thesis for an undergraduate degree, plus I'm doing a major/minor in economics and busines so will I have to do 2 thesis ?

Oh, no you won't have to do two theses. But in Business, you'll have to do a module called MN341 where you will do a market simulation and compete against other teams like. It's very time consuming.

An undergraduate thesis isn't nearly as massive as a graduate thesis of course, it's just one module among others. You better be good at doing independent work though, because there are no classes in that module and just two deadlines (one for literary review, one for the thesis as a whole).

It's not that difficult to be honest - most supervisors will give you a pretty good idea about what you have to do and where you can find data etc. Time management is the tricky part, as you only have two deadlines (one for the literature review and one for the thesis itself). But a thesis is not something you can write overnight, so you need to have discipline and study continously over the year.

Try not to worry too much about it until you have more information.
If you know the module leader, maybe send them an email highlighting your nerves and worries. They will put you at ease and might be able to give you some information to relax you a little bit.
Don't panic, the departments are there to help!

It's going to be as difficult as you make it. Pick a topic that there is plenty of data out there both in terms of literary review and actual research data( ask lecturer what previous students did) . Remember it's only worth 5 credits so it's only worth the same as module in economics or finance so don't spend too much time on it to the detriment of other subjects.

Guys as I do major/minor a thesis is not important, but I heard tha if I dont do it will loose the bsc honors and I will just get a basic degree.

    Is this true ?

You need to go and talk to your year head in each department and talk to them about. Due to the combination of modules and degree options, each will be different and my experience may be different to the next posters.

The best advice I could give you is to find out when you can meet your year head in each department, have as much information as you possibly can find and ask them. Lecturers teach individual modules and may not be aware of course requirements of other modules, so the overall year manager is the best option to go to.

Try not to worry about it but you should try and find out as soon as possible, purely for your own sake.

    Good Luck!

When I did the thought masters in software engineering, the amount or credits assigned to the thesis was the same as 3 whole modules if I remeber correctly. A masters thesis is a lot more difficult than an undergrad. best bit of advice I can give is to meet at least once a week with your supervisor. All my frineds on my undergrad course that didnt meet their supervisor failed their thesis.
