Passat B5.5 5 or 6 speed

Did a search there but couldn't track down a previous thread on this.

I'm looking at a chape (€2k-€3k) 1.9TDi B5.5 Passat (doing lots and lots of miles for the forseeable future) but not sure about the 5 or 6 speed to go with.

I know the 5 speed has 100bhp and the 6 speed has 130bhp. More power is always nice but I have vague recollections of hearing the 6 speeds were more prone to giving trouble. I'd sooner a slower more reliable car than quicker one I might have to pop €€€'s into for a new gearbox down the line.

I did a Google search also but wasn't really finding much which was a plus. Curious to know if I just dreamt about problems with the 6 speed or not?

***Editing- just used different terms for the search there and finding some threads on the 6 speed gearbox, but still curious to hear any new thoughts.

It's very hard to find a nice one for reasonable money.

Same clutch and DMF used for both gearboxes.
I had to replace a gearbox in my 98 passat (same 5-speed box) when synchromesh failed on 3rd gear, a common failure mode on those boxes if they go.

You can get 130bhp Passats of that era with either 5 or 6 speed gearboxes.

In the UK, the "Sport" trim had the better seats with adjustable squab, and the 6-speed box as standard, but that trim level never made it to the Irish market.

If you can get the 6-speed do, as it's a more pleasant drive and a little bit better for the fuel economy with a lower RPM at cruising speed, and it's regarded as a better gearbox for tuning with because of this as well.

I've not heard of longevity differences between the two boxes at all.

Ah there's some not too shabby ones arounds - buying purely to cover the 26k miles a year and need saloon so even if it's a bit rough around the edges she'll do the job :D.

That's good to hear - I would like the extra kick and do I lot of motorway miles so being able to drop it into 6th would be nice. Thanks for the info Popoutman.
