    Hi Folks,
What nutritional products do you use before, during and after running and which ones do you believe have genuinely been a benefit to you?

I am referring to whey protein, recovery drinks, shakes, gels, vitamins etc or anything else...

No protein, chocolate milk after a long run, no shakes, gels during marathons and some long runs, no vitamins.
    My urine isn't worth **** :)

Gels during longer events. Nothing else

I might take a gel if I was doing a 20+ mile training run, but If I was passing the car and had a banana/some jellies I'd take that instead. Other than that I just take water.

I'd have gels if racing a marathon or ultra.

Choc milk and a banana after sessions

Them Lidl dissolving Vit C drinks once a day usually in morning

The odd Cod liver oil tablet

pretty much sums me up though used to use High five 5:1 but too expensive to keep stocked the whole time so stick to my diet to what i need

People seem to forget that milk and chocolate milk ain't free either.
I use ON 2:1:1 Recovery which contains 30 servings. It costs me just over 30 euro for a tub of it so just over a euro per serving. I use it with water. The convenience of being able to bring it to work/traveling etc where fresh milk would be difficult is handy for me. Now if I was paying the shop price for it then fair enough it would be expensive alright but there is not a huge difference in the price.
Can someone work out the price per serving of chocolate milk ?

Now last year I used to take a crap load of vitamins : glucosamine , cod liver oil, super one, ... I binned them all and with better training my times have improved much much more. Buyer beware tbh. I went into Holland & Barret and the helpful (too much so) sales assistant was great at telling me I needed X,Y and Z. Normally I would not be duped into such but looking back on it I was. Expensive p**s I agree. I probably could not take ON but have it all based on diet but its a lazy approach. Very hard to get protein in for 3 meals a day. I do take a course of Udo's Choice Super 8 Probiotic after an antibiotic as I have a tendency to get run down after them.

One thing to note there vitamin A in cod liver oil and in most multivitamins and too much can cause hardnesing of the liver if taken together. I know the holland and barret one is like 1000mg or something like that. i am of a firm believer now that all vitamins etc should be suggest on the basis of blood tests rather your helpful hippy/sales rep.

At least you know what goes into your milk!

Multivitamin and a cod liver oil capsule every morning.
Honey, fruit, lots of water, yazoo shake after 20km+ runs or milk, lately I've been taking gels on long runs (kinetica or maxifuel, the caffinated strawberry zing and fruit punch ones taste like stale fags and are gack, I'm an ex-smoker)
    Water and dioralyte during runs.
I'm not a fan of gels as I think they are too engineered and some of the ingredients read like a whos-who of noxious substances, So I've been experimenting with the organic baby smoothies (ella's kitchen and adding glucose syrup to them for extra energy, tasty and easier on the stomach but the pouches are big.

    Cost:
Yazoo are 1.09 in tesco if you don't get the ones from the fridge, the glucose syrup was 1.40, ella's smoothies are 1.05 but often on special in multipacks, gels are 1.70-2.00 each, water free (private well) or 2ltr bottles to bring to work (0.69-2.00 depending of where I get them) Diorylyte is 0.45 a sachet or around 8.20 for a box of 20 (0.41 each).
Honey, around 3.00, can't remember, but its not fancy manuka or anything.

    :o:o

Yazoo for 1.09. What size are those. How many servings per bottle ? Which Multivitamin ? You can get manuka from aldi cheap now. Normal honey just ain't the same. ella's kitchen ??? my daughter just vomited a load of that stuff last night, so not a good sign to be taking that on a run. In france at the moment and the "good quality" baby food (for when we are traveling) is so much better than the crap we get at home which may be organic etc but still processed to the last. What concentrate do you mix the Diorylyte with ? Have you tried nuun tablets ?

No, but it tastes like chocolate :)

(I get a litre, costs about 1.60?, and drink most of it straight after my long run. The rest is for the kids)

Watch yourself in france. Everything is full of fake sugars. Didnt think their process food was any better, but would never give baby it.

Keep an eye on their water as some have loads of sodium in it.

I find the whey protein is great for after long run or tough session.

Interesting. yeah going for water with with under 20mg of sodium per liter is recommended. Evan is good as I think its under 10 and has a nice picture of baby on it too :D

475ml, I drink it all, so that would be a single serving for me.yum:D. Technically I would say it might not be a single serving.
    A whole bottle contains:
    285kcal,
    14.725g protein,
    45.6g carbs (all sugars),
    5.7g fat (4.275g saturated),
    0.2375g sodium,
    510mg calcium

    Berroca

Depends on the research you reference, honey is a good source of energy, I never said I took it for antibacterial or medicinal purposes, which is the property most touted of Manuka. There are also questions about blended varieties vs non blended, and how it is difficult to trace the purity of origin due to plants within the same environment coming into flower at the same time as Manuka. Cheaper versions may not have the full trace history, which would make them just honey.

My 15mth old vomited water after drinking it to fast and getting some down the wrong way, does this mean that water is also bad? I said I was experimenting, I found them pleasent to take and didn't feel any worse for taking them even during a 50km event. I didn't get the same kick out of them as I do with highly manufactured gels, hence the recent addition of glucose syrup.

I use 2 or 3 sachets for 1.5 ltr water depending on what I've eaten / drank prior to my run, the recommended dose is 1 sachet for 200ml so a 2.5 - 3.5 x weaker solution. Sometime I will add a cordial to give it a bit of flavour, again a very weak lemon or lime concentrate. No never tried Nuun tablets, just something else that I would have to add to the mix, I already feel that what I use works well enough at this point in time.

Finally, I may be mis-reading your post but I seem to be on the defensive here, I feel as if I'm having to explain why I chose my particular tastes / preferences. If I'm wrong I sorry. I understand that people are different and many prefer to use proper sports supliments. I was only replying to the original post with what I use.

My loads of questions was that I am interested in your opinion and what works for you as I am only trying to find what works for myself also. I was not trying to poke holes in what you do but rather learn from and benefit for your experience as we are all learning. When a person gets to a stage where they think they can't benefit from other people then they are doomed. I love learning new things. My mother who never runs said that mustard in warm water is great to soak the feet in for runners as they did when she was young so I tried it and find it great. Cheap mustard in Aldi less than a euro. Softens out the hard skin which is great. I only ask questions as I want to learn more. :)
PS: sorry if my questions sounded abrupt. I just love to ask questions :). Life would be no fun without questions to get answers to.

    Humble pie...
Contains per serving (100g) (I find on occasion that I have to eat more) :o
    0 kcal
    0g Carbs (all sugar)
    0g fat
    Sodium trace
    Calcium trace

I'm finding that it isn't great for short runs, good for long hilly runs where every footstep is accompianed by "Doh" as I mentally beat myself over my online dumbness..
    :o:o:o
Sorry, I think I might need to work on my boards skills a bit.

    Mustard, might try that.

If you are trying the glucose syrup warm it in water to get it runny before adding it.
Also sesame snap bars are a nice (but sort of dry) quick fix.
Coconut water /juice? is also great for quenching thirst and replacing lost fluids and some research says its potassium content aids recovery. Most of the Asian shop have it in largish cans.

    Sorry again, again.

Don't worry about it. being a reformed IRC troll I have very thick skin :)
I find water on its own actually slows me down. I was listening to a Ron Hill interview the other day from marathon talk and he was saying that he ran 2:08 without any fluid (not advisable for the mere mortal) but he was says that drinking water from a cup could mean that you swallow a load of air too which will impact your lung capacity. Very interesting interview on what does and doesn't work for him back in the day when cheap was the name of the game.
