How do i find what the Speed Limit is on a particular stretch of road, if i am only to use gps coordinates ?

I have a list of (hundreds of) coordinates and need to find out the speed limit at each point, is there a website that will provide this info, or will i have to use street view and seach along a stretch of road until i see a sign ?

What sort of road is it and where is it located? If you know these two, you can tell the speed limit 90% of the time.

roads all over the country, all i have is gps coordinates (600 of them)

Road speed limits
There are a total of five different types of speed limits throughout Ireland:

Town and city speed limits
National road speed limits
Regional and local road speed limits
Motorway speed limits
Special speed limits
Town and city speed limits (50 km/h)
A speed limit of 50 kilometres per hour is in place in built-up areas (other than motorways or special speed limit zones).

National road speed limits (100 km/h)
A speed limit of 100 kilometres per hour is in place on all national roads (including dual carriageways) throughout Ireland.

Regional and local speed limits (80 km/h)
A speed limit of 80 kilometres per hour is in place on all regional and local roads (sometimes referred to as non-national roads).

Motorway speed limits (120 km/h)
A speed limit of 120 kilometres per hour is in place on all motorways. You should note that learner drivers, vehicles under 50 cc, bicycles, pedestrians, animals and invalid carriages are not allowed on motorways in Ireland.

but how do you tell from a gps coordinate or street view if the road is 100 or 80

or if it is 50 or 60

some dual carriageways are 60

put the co ords into google and it should tell you the road, don't think there is any easy way out of this

i've been trying that but.. any given N road will have every possible speed limit on it at varying stages.

Likewise for R roads

thats why i said it wouldn't be easy

Don't the likes of tomtom satnavs know this?

they will only display the speed if you are traveling along the road, not if you just zoom in to a particular point on the map

anyways.. the thought of manually tapping each coordinate in is mind numbing

The NRA would have this data, but I'd have my doubts they'd share it. Or the AA possibly. Is your requirement academic or commercial?

I'm sure this data exists somewhere since it's available for GPS systems. It's a matter of finding a source and querying the data programmatically. This might be more a programming query than a motors one.
Best of luck.

There is also a couple of examples where speed limits differ on opposite sides of the road.
If this is for work OP, your boss hates you.

Where are these?

I have often thought this should be done I. Some place but I have never seen it.

Its a personal project at the moment

i've found how to do it using http://www.google.com/mapmaker , but there are no roads showing for ireland :(

back to the drawing board

I just assume unless the road signs tell me otherwise, then the speed limit is 50kph.

How about compiling the list of locations by county. Then link the roads up in a post for let's say kildare and post up in the kildare forum asking locals for information on the roads?

you would be wrong in your assumptions so..

i spent a lot of time compiling data, i don't want to just give it away.
otherwise it would be a good solution

No, I don't think so. That's what it says in the Highway Code/Rules of the Road....

I assume unless the signs tell me otherwise there is no speed limit :pac:

@Op that's a truly dreadful project to do

No, I don't think so. That's what it says in the Highway Code/Rules of the Road....

And what about the 30kph zone's then,

Op good luck with the stat collecting but the randomness of where there's a change of limit (in some places) is quiet random but hope it goes well for you.

See above. Obviously, you didn't see this before you posted....

Actally the speed limit is 100 unless other wise stated

You should research "special" speed limits

Bty research is going well.. But slow.

Usually when I don't know current speed limit, I try to stay between 50-60 km/h (unless it's a national primary)

How did the research go in the end? Did you find a source or accumulate the data yourself?

I gave up.

It was a nightmare.

However, if someone knows where I can input a gps co-ord and get a corresponding speed limit, I would be massively thankful.

Ye I'm looking for the same type of information for a personal project also. I'm guessing you where going to create some sort of mobile app to inform and warn users of their speed limit :)

it's for personal use :)

I have a type of system working for the past few years that has served me well, but I'd like to make it a more polished system, that would only alert when with in x km/h of the speed limit , of a given point.

I do have a Garmin from a few years ago that does this - if you choose so, it displays the speed limit in a corner of the screen. It was quite accurate, the only times it would indicate a wrong limit were when going through roadworks and the likes. It would even go "beep beep beep" when you approached a known speed camera location and your speed was above the posted limit.

I never updated the software maps as the cost was as much as a new unit, so it's out of date now.

My current garmin displays the speed as you travel along the road, but I need to know the speed limit at given points (over 1000)

I like to drive really really fast up and down a road and eventually a nice policeman will come along and wave me down to give me a little ticket showing me what the speed limit is.

i'm not sure it would scale up very well though, you'd use a lot of fuel. :D

That only works on motorways or N routes, the Gardaì don't bother with other roads.

On the sat-nav in my 2011 Golf, the speed limit for the road I was travelling on would display itself in the corner of the screen, so someone has the data you're after. Not sure who provides the software for VWs systems.

Right,
No one knows.

I think i'll leave things there for a while, maybe i'll ask again in 2016

Someone knows but you'll have to pay. My phone and sat nav both display the speed limits for roads and the limit changes as I pass the sign.

Openstreetmap has the speed limit data recorded for many roads, if the contributors have input it. You might be able to automate the process and write a script to pull that data from the road closest to your coordinate.

Otherwise you could write a script that will open the google streetview image for each of your list of coordinates, you would then navigate along manually until you found a limit sign.

Thanks
I'll look into open street map.
And try and figure out how to write a script

TBH Excel or similar could do it, and it would just save you copying and pasting manually.

You just need to generate a list of links in the format https://maps.google.com/?cbll=LATITUDEVALUE,LONGITUDEVALUE&cbp=0,0,,0,0&layer=c

I know someone who is an expert in excel, and has helped me in the past with a project or two.

thanks for your input

I'm still at a loss

i'm using the following

https://maps.google.com/?cbll=LATITUDEVALUE,LONGITUDEVALUE&cbp=0,0,,0,0&layer=c
(with the relevant coordinates),

but only getting a black screen

ideas ??

• Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,538 ✭✭✭TheChizler

This one works, try replacing the coordinates in this https://maps.google.com/?cbll=40.714103,-74.006206&cbp=12,20.09,,0,5&layer=c
