Seeing as it's silly season I thought I'd start this one off. It's always good to remember some old (or recent) tries that brings a grin! What's your favourite? There's some memorable ones out there. They can be international, provincial, club or school tries! I always liked these threads because I have a terrible memory and there's always someone out there that brings up some gems! :D

I'll get the ball rolling. This try would be common place in the current Leinster setup, but back a few years ago it wasn't so common and certainly wouldn't be something you'd expect to see being pulled off against superpower Toulouse. Watch the replay of it from the head-on camera view to get a great idea of just how fast the ball is passed. Conters inside ball rips them apart, from there Horgan makes easy ground but the key is passing it back outside with top pace, and then the only slow pass is the lovely pop from Conters before BOD comes onto it with silly superhuman gas. I still get goosebumps watching it!

Along with Hickie the only Irish winger who could take people on the outside

Gordon Hamilton. I remember watching this and jumping around the place. Shame those pesky Australians had to spoil it immediately afterwards, but it was a great moment.

    Haha, love the goose step.

Foinn Carr has such a fear of the touchline it's hilarious.

Even including Schmidt's tenure, that's the best try I've seen Leinster score. The sheer accuracy and difficulty of execution was unreal. The BOD try against Cardiff was up there but the level of opposition and non-effort from Cardiff has to be taken into account. The Toulouse one was exquisite; indefensible.

You're right, I agree. What I should've said was 'This kind of try..'. It's by far my favourite, and it's funny you mention the Cardiff try as I was weighing it up as a contender! But as you say, the opposition makes a huge difference, and that was an amazing Toulouse team.

I forgot about the Limerick crowd during that game. I remember being in total awe when seeing the feed being broadcast... and a little jealous too! ;)

Can anyone help me find an O'Driscoll try he scored for Ireland against France probably mid of the last decade onwards?

It was in the 6 nations I'm almost certain and I'm pretty sure Ireland lost the match but I remember it was a good individual try. I also think Benoit Baby might have been playing for France.

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 18,266 Mod ✭✭✭✭CatFromHue

Was it the one in the corner in Lansdowne Road that was given by the TMO even though it looked very dodgy? I think it was the first or one of the first times Ireland had played in a game with a TMO too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,302 ✭✭✭Schorpio

I could really post all 3 of his tries that day, but the last is one of my all time favourites.

Nah, think we won that game (entirely thanks to that very dodgy TMO try). Was it the game were Baby should have been sent off for a blatant headbutt?

Need more forwards trys in this thread I think

No, I think it was an individual solo effort and touched down underneath the posts.

Showing my age here can't find it on YouTube but for many years RTE used th show a classic try from the early 1970s with some big huge ginger Rish guy dragging half the England team with him across the line, anyone remember?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,207 ✭✭✭durkadurka

    That'll be ginger mc loughlin.
    1982. It's a gem. I think he's the mayor of limerick now.

Maybe one of you folks on a pc could embed it for me. I'm on a phone.

Some great memories there guys, I recall a few favourites from the pre-video/utube era which I'm sure some old heads will remember:

Ken Goodall from the halfway line against the great Welsh team in 1970 when Ireland scored 14 & Wales nil

Mike Gibson at Twickenham in the early sixties

Kevin Flynn's last minute winner at Twickenham in 1972

Yes. Gibson tearing England apart from out half as an 18 year old. He might get a look in as a 28 year old these days.... :D
..and Goodall's try against the Australians. What a player he was.

Flynn's try was the first scored by an Irish centre for about 4 years. It was a classic centre break. I can still see it clearly in my mind.

This one from Toulouse vs Leinster. Absolute frenetic stuff leading up to some brilliant play and a top drawer finish from Denis Hickey.

Here's a sneaky bit of opportunism from Gibson against Australia in 1967.

That is an absolutely stellar try which Heaslip finished superbly.

The best game we ever played under Kidney.

Thanks for that, a couple of oddities.

That is the only rugby match that, if asked, I could name the date of without having to think for a split second, its etched upon my grey matter - 14th March 1970 when the cream of Welsh rugby failed to trouble the scoreboard.

Other ancients may remember a photo of the Alan Duggan try printed with Ned's match report in the Irish Times. It was taken from slightly back along the touchline and captured Duggan's dive, perfectly horizontal in the pic and beyond that a man of mature years caught in his jump both feet off the ground, arms spread, clutching his hat, fully ecstatic.

A perfect day for me as a sixteen year old, never to be forgotten.

Heaslip needs to get fat again. I refuse to believe that it was a coincidence that he was at his peak when he had a belly.

He's faster now though. Looks like he was running through custard to finish that try.

It was a brilliant try tbf, all the tries we scored in that game were actually but that was the best of them.

Heaslip vs France, Mannion vs Wales in (which bizarrely was shown to 1 billion people at the Olympics on Friday night!) and now that Goodall try, again against Wales (had never seen it before watching that clip) are my three favourites Irish No.8 tries.

Whilst last season will undoubtedly go down in the record books for Leinster as one of the best, I'll always have more fond memories of the 2010/11 H-Cup campaign. Considering the group of death we were in the team really played some outstanding rugby. Here's a video of all the tries from the pool stages.

If I had to pick one from the bunch it'd probably be Kearney's try in the Racing match (0:36). As nice a try you'll see from a set piece - once again Sexton's ability to read the defense at speed cuts the defending team open, they're going backwards from the second phase onwards.
