Good interview with Martin Fagan on the radio this morning. It went into depth of his life as a full-time athlete and what happened over the last few months. Like most I was disappointed when the news broke and I'd have no time for drug cheats, but listening to him this morning I began to understand a little why he did it.
He painted a picture of a tough, lonely life as someone trying to make a living as a runner and the dark place he was in at the time. The endless hours of training and barely scrapping a living from it. No mock tudor mansions, fast cars, money to burn. He came across as a shy, almost fragile person, worried about his weight - he could'nt understand why he was'nt as skinny as the africans. This on top of ongoing depression, which anyone who's suffered or knows someone who suffered from it, will understand its an awful condition.
But he seems to be getting his life back together. Back home with his family, enjoying running with his club and going to college this year, but unlikely he'll ever comeback to the top class again. Sounded like he had enough of that life.
We admire those at the top of our sport and maybe envy them, but its not always as it seems.
Its not so bad slogging around the roads in our spare time, been happy with a good placing in a local race or shaving a couple of seconds off a PB.

Any idea on what station this was on? They might have some sort of podcast we could listen back to.

He was on with Claire Byrne - Marian Finucane's usual Saturday slot on RTE radio1 11-1pm.

Heard this one myself this morning. He still seems very fragile but I suppose its a good sign he is able to talk about it a bit more now. He also doesn't hide from the doping as a form of cheating and says that openly but again nice to seem him still enjoy the sport (from a non competitive side as still wouldnt feel right with him coming back to racing)

Podcast available here. The show seems to be broken into a few episodes, the part with Fagan is the 3rd one. Also the 4th one listed is about the Olympics and nutrition. Might be worth a listen as well.
