Our laburnum has developed a kind of large canker which is oozing thick brown "goo". Does anyone know what this might be and what should we do about it? Should we cut the tree down?

If its doing that from the main stem I'd say it was a gonner, if its only from a few branches then maybe you can prune out the infected areas. I've certainly seen canker like you describe on Laburnums and tbh there isn't anything you can do about it, you might get another year or so of flowering out of it but its on a downward slope.

btw hang on to the timber its got a great dark coloured hartwood with contrasting light sapwood so is great for wood turning.
