Thanks to everyone who contributed to my recent critically-acclaimed thread on a related subject. Now we're looking for route suggestions from Rosslare to Bundoran. Our plan is to do it over two days, going up through the midlands. Any opinions? Is any of it in any way scenic?

Did a round trip from rosslare to sligo but it took me a week! two days sounds very good, are to touring with gear?
both routes I used where quite exposed so wind made a big difference.
My up was was via carlow, athy, longford, sligo, and back was through rossocommon, shannon bridge, roscrea, kiltealy.

from a planning point of view there are only a couple of options, since you will need to cross the slaney and shannon rivers, the m8 and m5 motorways, take a look at a map and decide on your crossing points and the rest will fall into place pretty quick.
if I was doing it again I would have followed the shannon for a lot longer a it will take you through some scenic spots with some nice stops along the way.

We won't have much gear - we're adopting a minimalist approach to touring. Thanks for those options. Carlow > Athy > Longford looks like a fairly direct route.

I would suggest Carlow, Portlaoise, Tullamore, Kilbeggan, Ballymahon, Lanesboro, Roosky, Drumsna, Leitrim village, Manorhamilton, Kinlough, Bundoran. It is cross country from Drumsna but very scenic, passing Lough Allen and the Arigna Mountains.
Alternatively you could follow the N4 from Drumsna to Sligo and follow the main road up to Bundoran. This route is more civilised and would have a better surface suited to cycling.

I would definitely consider coming up through County Leitrim, quiet roads and great cycling surfaces. Drumsna to Bundoran through Sligo, noisy and dangerous.

I agree. We drive the N4 up to Donegal regularly. It would be really windy and all those white crosses on the road to Cliffoney are there for a sad reason. Leitrim will be hilly but a stop in Manorhamilton to recharge will help.

+1 - Roslare, Carlow, Portlaoise, Tullamore, Kilbeggan, Ballymahon, Longford, Drumsna, Drumshambo, Manorhamilton, Bundoran. There are some lovely roads for cycling from Drumsna to Bundoran, lovely scenery, good surfaces and saving you 20 miles than if you followed the N4 to Sligo.
