Do the NCT not send you a reminder? Just realised my one was up in April last, (was changing insurance disk). Both tax & insurance has been changed since & they didn't ask about it.

    Is there a penalty?

They don't send reminders for 2nd and subsequent tests isy experience.
No penalty unless some Garda person takes a dislike to you.

If you do test it now your disc will only be valid from a year or two years from April depending on the age of your car... That's a penalty in itself!!

No penalty if not caught. Ring up and book or book on line. The only major way this can affect you now is if you crash the car and insurance company won't pay out cause of no road worthiness cert or if the Garda pull u up. But if you are booked in. They should let you off

5 penalty points if the cops stop you!

They don't send letters anymore, it's up to yourself to check your car is legal on the road.

They don't send letters anymore. It is the owners responsibility to know when there car is due it's NCT and book the test.

I do get reminding letters, about a month before my test is due.
I don't know what's the policy but I do get them. Got one again beginning of July this year.
Now for a car that has never been tested it probably is different.

They do send a reminder...you stick it on your windscreen

(seriously though, its on your tax reminder, so yes they DO send one)

    Hi RoverJames..

    Why do you think Unlikely?

I thought that was the "standard prize" for no valid nct.

I got a letter a few months back (2nd test due) so it seems they are sending them out in some cases - typical Ireland, no consistency in anything.

Probably because most Gardai aren't interested in an NCT cert. If you come across a checkpoint at all (rare enough anyway), they'll be more interested in if you have valid tax

That said OP, go get your test - particularly if you haven't serviced it in a while.

I cannot understand how someone could miss this....

What happened to doing visual checks on your vehicle to make sure it was still hanging together?????.

I dunno. I was pulled a couple of years back - I was speeding, on the phone and hadn't an NCT - I was only charged over the NCT.

very easily id say, thats why they sent out reminders for tax and insurance.
only visual checks i do is to see if my car is there, if it is i drive it :p

Hmmmmm...I was stopped a good few weeks ago in the City here...Nct was out..

Guard told Me right there that he would issue a summons...Rather than take the car from Me.

So,,got to sit back for another while now and wait for the summons to arrive.

No standard prizes for no NCT. Up to the judge on the day. 5 points would only be for repeat offenders.

Got reminder letters when living in Longford an got one this year when living in Kildare.

They randomly send them it seems. I don't need a reminder and noone should need a reminder for insurance, tax or nct. There's a disc in your window ffs. I would really hate to think of the cars service history if you can't be bothered to look at a disc in your window.

Yep, I have 2 here sent to me for my daily driver. They clearly never updated their database, unless they test vans now?

One was sent to me a few years ago, titled to Miss Mal.... Got the gender wrong too

So if your car has never been tested, do they send a notification out? Or when do you need to do it if you have never done it before?

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 4,255 ✭✭✭Yawns

you would need to book it asap and have it done to avoid any legal ramifications such as a fine, penalty points or a summons.

I was actually stopped recently but didnt have nct cert on the windscreen, only tax/insurance and Garda said nothing!

According to the RSA website, it's now a mandatory court appearance for those caught driving without a valid NCT cert. Up to 5 penalty points and a court fine.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,473 ✭✭✭✭Our man in Havana

Always has been the case but Gardaí being creatures of habit have been ignoring this for years.

Judges tend to only fine for this also. The 5 points is just a scare the peasants tactic.

Tested this morning, was expecting a Fail, but passed with very low percentages of imbalance (max 8% on suspension).

Very surprised, guy even said "very clean motor".
