this series is getting repeated on more4 at the moment.

its english bobbies, in my opinion its probably the most honest police programme ive seen on television.

they are not overly serious, chat with prisoners and show the real life going on. also they give their own personal opinions on prisoners, law and other officers.

would a programme like this work here?
personally i dont think so, the public here are far too keen to hold the gardai up to completely unbelievable standards, they dont think gardai should have their personal opinions.
i find the english people are always willing to back their police, they believe their police to be doing a good job if they are getting their criminals off the streets, here people are way to bothered about criminals rights.

so what do you think? would an honest real life programme like 'coppers' work in ireland?

I think it would. People love that stuff. As for the opinions given by the officers, you can simply transfer them to ourselves. We all think the same of the people we deal with.

Great show this, there is a similar one called traffic blues that follows the gards around, but that is more like traffic cops

Not a chance could it work here if gardai were to give honest opinions about the people they come in contact with the self righteous do gooders would call for gardai to be sacked Joe duffys phonelines would go into meltdown and the newspapers would find some reason to call for a paycut. IMO a lot of Irish people who don't as a rule come into contact with the criminal fraternity live in a fantasy land a programme like that would not suit that fantasy

under the garda siochana act 2005 a guard could receive a seven year fine, huge fines and dismissal for innapropriate contact with the media.

the penalties are right up there with manslaughter. with that in mind what guard would be stupid enough to go on tv and give opinions of anything at all.

it would possibly be good but with the above, i dont ever see it working in this country :(

But it wouldn't be inappropriate contact, for a show like that to be made, it would have to be signed off by management before being released to air.

The fact that it would need managements backing to even be filmed would mean the member would be safe once he follows whatever guidelines have been agreed upon between the production company and ags.

Yup, Coppers would become another Traffic Blues. :o

    Could not agree more.

If people knew what goes on in criminal circles. The money involved that never makes it onto paper, the welfare fraud, legal aid, disability aid, black markets, fuel smuggling etc etc.

Gardai know exactly what goes on but to the people living in a fantasy land all we do is speed checks and checkpoints for tax.

Coppers is a great series, imho I don't think it would work here. AGS management seem far too keen to water down what the public see of the work they do (Traffic Blues being a prime example of this). I think we're a long way from a time where members are allowed to give their honest opinions on TV, which is a shame because I feel a series like this could help to break down a few barriers (or am I being a tad naive). People seem to think that Gardai are robots, not normal human beings.

As an aside, I had to laugh when I saw Pitlochry being shown on Coppers. I did an internship there two years ago, and yes it really is that quiet. :D

Looking at it last night, great program, Honest opinions from the police interviewed.

Wouldn't happen here, No reflection on the guards involved but imo Traffic blues was embarrassing.
