    Only with the customers consent, unless it was in the news of course.

    Same way some employers do. Request under the data protection act.

    Doesn't Data Protection Act only apply to private companies. Freedom of Information Act applies to state agencies. Or am wrong?

    As far as I can tell, the only way to get this information is through the Garda vetting unit, and then you can only make a request if your business involves having people with unsupervised access to children or vulnerable adults.

    Otherwise it doesn't seem to be possible for any employer to background check a client or employee.

    What they do is require the potential employee to make the request to the Gardaí and hand them the information. I don't think it should be allowed myself.
