Hi lads just tested all cows for scc as was getting a few high tests.

Came back with 3 cows @ 1,400,000 or thereabouts! Any suggestions on how best to deal with them?

    Thanks

make up your mind whether you are keeping them or selling them.... if keeping them , cmt them and treat them... otherwise i would bring them to the mart

I'd like to try n keep or at least give a shot at treating as they are some of the best ones in the heard typical!
Any suggestions on best treatment approach?

get your vet to do a sensitivity test, that will tell you what you are dealing with and what to treat it with

As culls how much are they worth, particularly if they're early in the lactation?

have sold a few during the year off farm.... just dried them off , got what i asked for them, i was happy and the buyer was happy also..... it would have taken alot of feeding to finish them

I'm thinking not going to panic, gonna see what next tank test is like, this may all be weather related and may settle down, if is does I'll test the 3 next month again and if it doesn't I'll treat them one at a time and test again. If it's still fecked then they may have to go

CMT the cows and find the quarters with the high counts. If only one quarter, treat with both mastitis tubes and a compatible injection if you think they are worth keeping for another year. When drying off, if the SCC is still high, Treat with a mastitis tube or 2 and a dry cow tube(as Whelan1 said, it would be a good idea to make sure the antibiotics you are using are effective on the bugs so get a sensitivity test done, 2 week to get results though).
Other option is to dry off the quarter(about half those quarters will go permanently, in my experience)

If more than one quarter high, the cure rate will probably halve ie one of the 2 quarters will still be high, so those ones should probably be dried off or sold. Definately use injections with these if you are keeping them.

Younger cows will have a higher cure rate than older ones, overall cure rates of about 50% according to my vet.

Looks like my first step before anything will be to get a cmt kit!
Cheers whelan n five for d advice

I suppose I'd be looking at picking one up early enough in the lactation to draft a few weanlings onto for a few months and then dry her off and send them on their way;).
