Warning : This post contains no pricing info at all
I played the demo of this a minute ago. I've never played any games in the series so can someone let me know :
    1. Is the gameplay representative of this game series as a whole?
    2. What the hell is going on?
    3. Am I just a really gifted button masher or is there no skill required whatsoever?
    4. Why am I physically abusing Pandas with a giant key while listening to "Part Of That World" from the Little Mermaid? I know for a fact there's no giant key animal bashing in that film.

It struck me as a poor Prince of Persia 3D clone with a terrible camera system (and hence some serious map layout issues) that has borrowed it's plot and artwork from The World Ends With You, but shoehorned in a couple of casual disney references (well... the sea witch is in the tutorial). And yet I gather people are fanatical about these games. What am I missing?

Kingdom Hearts is a collaboration between Disney and Square Enix made up of 9 action RPG games so far.

The basic idea is the each disney film (including the little mermaid, Aladdin, Nightmare before Xmas and Tron) exists as a world that you can visit during the story of the games. A lot of final fantasy characters exist in the game too (there are a lot of mogs, but bigger characters like Cloud, Sephiroth and Tidus are there too). The 3DS game has characters from The World Ends with You hence it might look like its borrowed some elements from it (although if you played the same demo as me, you only meet the main character of TWEWY, the town you are in has been in Kingdoms Hearts since the first one, 10 years ago).

The attraction is, imo, the story is pretty good (better at the the start, it got pretty emo in some games though) and the gameplay is usually quite good (easy at the start, can get pretty challenging, the hand held games are usually let down a bit by weak cameras). The early story was quite disneyesque - good vs evil, boy trying to save a girl from "heartless" monsters, but tied in with various disney movies (works better than you would think). However in trying to flesh it out its gone down the route of emo-androgenous-anxsty characters route that is so common in FF games, so a lot of the new characters in the later games are unique to KH but feel like they come from bad FF fan fiction (so best to read the wiki site if you want a full recap).

I'd like to make a correction here. The storyline is absolute garbage in all the games. They are fun and pretty but my god are the stories god awful!

I think the story in the first one is fine. Its very much a disney story, with the monsters being quite literally heartless and each level running through a specific disney world, tying the main characters journey into the classic disney films. Its no Portal or Shadow of the Colossus, but it was a fun, fairly simple disney-type story and it worked.

But then the makers seemed to think that people liked the games because of the few Final Fantasy references and so wanted more emo-androgenous-horrible jrpg cliche ridden muck that Square Enix seems to be famous for nowadays ("The World Ends with You" is supposed to buck the trend, I believe). It didn't help that the games are on multiple gaming systems, going PS2-GBA-PS2-DS-DS-PSP-3DS, with the the GBA one being integral to everything that happens after, so if you don't play that you are really lost.

Excellent - so it's not just me :)

So I read the wiki article. The in-game plot development must be awesome because the chronology laid out there is nonsense :)

Well I did enjoy the first games storyline. It was nonsense but it had a lot of charm. But my god did it get awful!

Well it's actually kind of funny playing KH2 and seeing how ridiculous it gets. I never finished KH2, I must go back but my god was it nonsense! Don't let it put you off the games though, they're good fun even if they kind of messed up the combat system and made the games way too easy compared to the first game.
