Teeth moved forward leaving big gap - AFTER BRACES

    Hi guys!

I got braces on in Nov 2011, I got them taken off in June 2012. I only got the top ones on as this is all I could afford (and the top were all you can see when I speak/smile)

The dentist recommended a fixed retainer which is glued behind the top 4 front teeth. Now when I first got the braces removed and the retainer fixed my bottom teeth banged off the retainer when I spoke and closed my mouth. I put up with this for the rest of the day and the next morning I had to call just to make sure this was supposed to be happening. I felt like I couldnt eat/chew properly. They asked me to come in and they filed it down it felt better when leaving but the dentist did say it takes time to settle and time for me to get used to it.

1 month on I have a gap between my bottom teeth and my top! I have attached a picture to show what I'm talking about, this doesnt really show how bad it is, but I cant take the pic from the angle needed. I have a feeling this is from the fixed retainer, as my bottom teeth are fitting off it surly this has pushed my top teeth forward!!! I have read also this can happen. Has this happened to anyone else?

I have called the dentist but they cant fit me in until 10th Aug!!!! The dentist works overseas and isnt in the country until then!! If a gap this big has come in a month what will happen in the next month. My fear is having the pay for braces again...There is no way the dentist will take blame for this...will he? Where do I stand? :(

Best go to them and see what the story is, you could realistically not expect the teeth to relapse if you following the retention instructions. Hard to tell online, the inconvienance factor and late appointment wait would not make me happy, but thats a decision you made.

I have called a local ortho and he said for him to give me a second opinion I have to get permission from my origional ortho. I'm trying to arrange that.

Here are some more pics taken just now...do these look like teeth that had braces taken off only 1 month ago?

Also when I spoke to my local ortho he has did I get a plastic retainer as well as the fixed and I didnt. Apparently normally the two are given

Not really, but doing only one arch in your case was a bad idea as it was always going to be unstable, I assume you were told that. Why didn't you use the local orthodontist in the first place? Really at the end of the day any speculation on here is purely that.

My orgional issue was 1 of my front teeth stuck out more than the other...so I wanted that straightend by the looks of things she's made them all stick out to try and even it out.

Maybe doing 1 arch was a bad idea, She said doing both arch's would be best. I then said I cant afford both so if what I want cant be done then its fine I'd rather leave it. I thought as a professional if they are not going to be proud of the end product or in doubt in anyway they shouldnt take the task on? I trusted her. If it wasnt going to work she should have said. Not taken my money and given it a bash! I just dont know where I go from here and the thoughts of waiting another month

I wasnt living in this area at the time so I used a ortho in the City Centre as I work there too.

She defo has made a small cosmetic issue I huge one now!

Lot of people don't realise that you teeth are in a position dictated by you jaw size, tongue, lips and bite. Withou doing both arches in a lot of cases the end result is unstable. Again speculation but you have to take the advice you given.

So treatment was compromised from both sides, yours and the orthodontists'?
