Barman Refused Car Insurance

Just bought a car, and have been refused insurance by two companies due to entering my occupation as barman.

Is this common? Anyone recommend a company that doesn't have this policy?

High risk of you having a pint/10 after work and driving home with/without passengers.

Ferrying people home also even without alcohol I imagine they base their risk on. Accident and then claims from occupants.

    **** it, tell them you're a priest.

Actually no, that mightn't be the best idea either.

Is it possible you just work in Retail, rather than as a barman?

I don't even use my car for work as I just walk it's so close.

My friend was refused car insurance by tesco because he is an electrician and would be driving to a different place of work quite regularly.

Companies that refused were Tesco and Liberty. I rang up Tesco and she explicitly explained it was because of my listed occupation.

OPs example ideally shows that car insurance system in this country is very very far from being normal.

I had same problem years ago when I was a barman also was quoted higher rates because of occupation. Another thing they factor in is that the person that has just left your bar drinking may drive home and crash into you. I kid you not. Are there other job roles in the bar. ie the place I worked did B&B also so I described myself as receptionist as I would have booked people in from time to time. Do you do the stock take or any other jobs ?

I would have thought it would be cheaper as the roads are quieter at that time of night.

    Quieter but far more dangerous.

Why would he need business insurance when he doesn't own a business?

He's just an electrician employed by company.

I had the same experience many years ago when working as a barman. I was also told that there is a greater risk of you suffering criminal damage if you refuse someone and he recognizes your vehicle.

Tesco is more then likely the 'broker' is this case...obviously someone else is the underwriter.

EDIT: They are underwritten by RSA and won't insure me on an MR2 (online anyway) yet 123 has same underwriter and will insure me..

...guess there looking for less risky cars.

I was refused by 123 because I'd lived in Australia for a few years. Madness.

I got a fantastic quote from 123 this year on the SiR, they seem to have started insuring Jap stuff now. They wouldn't quote me on the Integra a couple of years ago

This isn't a new phenomenon, I started in the bar-trade in Dublin in 1983, and even then insurance companies were charging a loading because of this occupation. I remember one of the first things I was told was that if seeking car insurance, the trick was to describe your occupation as a shop assistant. It was the common job description that almost all of us gave, and it was even easier if the pub was owned by a group/company, as it was far better than giving the address as 'The White Horse', for example.

I worked in pubs for 4 years and had no problem getting quotes in those times. Very strange OP.

Musicians and bakers are on the same 'high risk' list. I kid you not.
