Flash: Nikon D40 on manual

Hi, I have a Nikon D40 and I have two lenses (E series 50mm f/1.8 and a Samyang 8mm fisheye) that I use quite often in comparison to my kit lens and I have to use them completely manually ie. they will not even work unless it is in manual mode and even then they won't meter - focus and aperture is manual too. I can use the on camera flash (in manual not TTL) by just setting it to less power

My question is: If I buy the SB400 flash, will I be able to use it with these lenses with the same functionality as the on camera flash? I'm just a little scared it won't work at all

    Thanks in advance
