Buying clipless pedals for the first time

I am relatively new to road cycling and want to make the move to clipless pedals (hate the stock cages that came with my bike). Could anyone advise on whether these dhb shoes would work with either of the following two sets of pedals:

    http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=50512
    http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=5937

I know the latter is a hybrid and possibly quite useful but would it, performance wise, be totally inferior to the Shimano 105? Both have a significant price discount at the moment.

I presume there'd be no issue about the pedals fitting into my gossamer fsa cranks?

    Thanks!

Ok thanks for clearing that up, it's so hard to tell from the pictures how the shoes could actually 'clip into' the 105 pedals. Also, would the 105 screw into fsa gossamer cranks no problem? I presume most cranks have the same threading?

EDIT: Where did the above post go, he/she answered my question - did a mod delete it?? So is it true those shoes would only work with the shimano 105 spl sl?

Hey, I've actually removed my message because I'm not 100% sure whether SPD cleats would fit that shoe. It isn't mentioned in the description but it looks like they would in the pictures. I'll wait for someone else to confirm for sure.

But just be aware that SPD and SPD-SL are different beasts! With SPDs, you're more able to walk around. With SPD-SLs, you'll have a better pedalling platform, but with less ability to walk around. Either way, what will happen is that you will bolt on a cleat onto the bottom of the shoe, and that cleat will clip into the space in the pedal.

Yeap, new pedals should match up with all relatively new cranks, very few exceptions.

The DHB shoes, 105 pedals and your cranks will be fine!

Even if they do work together there would be absolutely no point in using SPDs with road shoes. Worst of both worlds.

Either get MTB shoes with SPDs or Road shoes with SPD-SLs (105).

Very true, didn't think of that.

Thanks for the input but I have to say I don't understand the above - will the dhb shoes linked above work fine with the shimano 105 pedals?

Yes. I just wanted to make it clear that both pedal systems will work with those dhb road shoes but one will be far superior to the other. It seems I made it less clear.:o

If you are buying the 105(SPD-SL/Road) pedals, buy ROAD shoes.

If you are buying the M324(SPD/MTB) pedals, buy MTB shoes.

This is what happens when you buy SPD/MTB pedals and ROAD shoes. They work but it's a bad solution.

Had the M324 as a first clipless pedal, and don't really rate them. The M424 is cheaper and double sided, hence easier to clip into. The platform also means it is fine to use as a flat pedal (i.e. without cleats / cycling shoes) in most situations.

    Thanks for the replies :)

So all I need now are the cleats - would these be suitable with the dhb shoes and shimano 105 pedals?

    Sorry, I'm full of questions!

Thanks but is the m424 not kind of meant for mtb shoes? crc categorises it under that.

Cleats will nearly always come with the pedals!

That's good news, one less expense to think about! Someone I know said they had to buy theirs separately.

That's v nice of you but unfortunately I went ahead and bought the pedals and shimano shoes from Amazon last night (only just discovered that Amazon now accepts laser via maestro!). I wish I'd held off till this morning now

However, I'm not 100% sure whether the Shimano pedals I ordered will come with cleats since they were suspiciously cheap so I'll get back to you if they don't. This is what I bought:

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B000NOPORM/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i01

    Thanks

As per Petethedrummers post and another recent thread, if you're going to go for SPDs you'll want MTB shoes. Road shoes are best used with road pedals. Is use SPDs, MTB shoes, on road and hybrid bikes. I also use regular trainers with the hybrid, and occasionally hiking boots.

Are you sure that's not the Maestro that the rest of the world has (i.e. Mastercard debit).

The Maestro in Ireland that AIB put on laser cards for example is different.

Yes I'm aware of the difference but it seems that Amazon now read Irish laser cards as being compatible with UK maestro system - when I entered my laser number the confirmation page said "thanks for shopping with your Maestro" or something to that effect. This now seems to work for most people; see the following thread:
