    Hello ladies and gentlemen

I was 19 when I started my insurance 7 months ago on a 01 1.2 clio it was little over 2 grand to insure it on a full licence that I have almost a year..... Today a female friend of mine, same age, got the exact same car, same insurance company as me and got insured in her own name for 1180 euro on a provisional licence that she has 2 weeks

How is this fair in any way shape or form

Well it depends on your perspective but come December, Gender will no longer be a deciding factor on Insurance and how it's calculated.

Like it or not, statistically, you're a higher risk driver.

Unfortunately you fit in the category of 18-24 which are considered the highest risk. Tis a balls really. :(

    Of course they would.

I'm sure they'd be burning their furry steering wheel covers in the street to be honest !

Your insurance won't be cheap but it will be cheaper, probably by about €20 and your female friend will, as marketty says, have to pay about €700-800 more.

Do women have these in their cars?

Yes we would complain if men got cheaper insurance.

Women complain about everything else do I don't think they would have a problem complaining about this :p (no offence intended, just a joke)

It would be nice if the prices were met in the middle but that would only happen in a perfect word and were faaar from that

That would kind of kill the equality aspect though.

That's not going to happen how will the justify charging women hundreds more for insurance?

    @Antares that is hideous.

I know but better than them getting a major discount for having tits

    That's a bit crude.

And anyway, I've got tits and don't get a discount.

They are not charged as much because they are a lower risk. Unfortunately, you just can't argue with the stats.

It seems when men crash, they do it in style and don't just take out a van, house and oncoming bus, they take down the Petrol tanker and and protected building of a church too.

Unfortunately it will, Some stupid EU directive (as a result of some disgruntled Belgian female who brought a case to the EU courts AFAIK) will force Insurers to charge the same for both sexes. Insurers aren't going to reduce male premiums because they are that for a reason i.e higher risk profile etc, so they will simply be forced to increase female premiums.

Because they 'have to', they will.

All the reports in the media indicate that probably is going to happen, although nobody can predict the future. The young woman the OP mentioned will simply be seen as a high risk 18-24 and charged accordingly higher.

In order for men to be treated fairly women have to pay more.

How is that fair on women?

Its not, I don't agree with it either, but insurers are laughing.

Because it's sexual discrimination to discount your premium based on your gender.

Yes I know all that but why can't men pay less?

Because, currently men & women's premiums are based on the claim rates for there risk profiles, younger men pay more because their claims are either more frequent or higher in amount.

    Because they're still high risk.

It's all swings and roundabouts and risk management.

    Look at the averages.

    30 women at 21 in a 1.2 Clio in Dublin, Swords pay 1000 = 30,000

    30 Men at 21 in a 1.2 Clio in Dublin Swords pay 1500 = 45,500

    Total = 75500

    Average Premium for male 1500
    Average Premium for female 1000

Non gender related Average Premium required is 1258 so men fall and women rise.

1258*60 is near enough to the 75k pot.

I've made a complete dogs bollocks of that but you get the general gist of it.

I'm 23 and have 5 Years NCB. (Full License 4 years)

I'm now paying insurance of the amount my friend (18 with provisional license and Female) payed starting off driving.

So yes i think its fair women pay the same.
