Advice on buying a Mac for direct capture of photogaphic images.

    I'm considering buying a Mac laptop.

    I'd happily buy a PC, but I need a laptop with an IEEE 1394b socket. So, question one is.....

    1. All Macs have an IEEE 1394 socket. Right?

    2. The software I want to run recommends 8Gb RAM and 500Mb video card memory. The software specs (Phocus for Mac or PC) can be read here>

    Here's the relevant paragraph for ease of reference.....

    "If working with the H4D-60 or any multi-shot cameras we recommend 8GB of RAM. Phocus is optimized for Intel processors, G4 or G5 PPC is not supported. 512MB of graphics card memory is recommended as a minimum."

    That's about it really. The computer will only be used for capture. Editing is done on a desktop.

    I've never owned a Mac. Up until now, I'd be using an IEEE 1394 card in a PC laptop slot and attaching a cable to it. The card may be faulty and they're difficult to buy. Hence my desire to replace it.

    So, where should I look in the Dublin area?

    Finally, which model would you recommend?

    Apple have been moving away from Firewire with the introduction of USB 3 and Thunderbolt. But you can get adapters for them which run as fast as Firewire.

    if it's only for capture, i'd buy any macbook pro from the past 2-3 years, they all have a firewire 800 port that you can connect the camera to
