    I saw a large group of what seemed to be butterflies flocking about the top canopy of a Scots Pine but on a closer look I think they might be moths....Any ideas on what they were doing and what they are.... Mating perhaps or feeding???

    The photo doesn't show it, but there were about 20-30 in the group..

    A few questions...in no particular order
    When? including time of day.
    Where?
    Altitude?
    Habitat? other trees?
    Size, if you can estimate, Red Admiral size?, Small Tortoiseshell? smaller/larger?
    Weather at time including indication of temperature (hot, warm, cool etc.)

    Needless to say, I don't know and I haven't seen this behaviour, but I have one suggestion.
    Bordered White, a moth. It is a little late compared to usual flight season, but the season is late or perhaps this was couple weeks ago?

    @ swifts need our help, ...yes, please pass on photo..

    @ Mothman, .... Photo taken last Tuesday 17th July @ 12.41hrs.
    Location near Coronation Plantation, Co. Wicklow on R759.
    normal Grid Ref = O 092 139
    10 digit Grid Ref = O 09242 13978
    Latitude = 53.16509 (north)
    Longitude = -6.36641 (west)
    Latitude = 53°9'54" (north)
    Longitude = 6°21'59" (west)
    Tetrad = O01W

    Here is the same photo enlarged....concerning size, at a guess probably the same size or very slightly larger than a Small Tortoiseshell..
