I recently purchased an old house built roughly around the 1970s. I dug a hole in the concrete floor to basically suss out what depth concrete there was and if there was any insulation/dpm underneath.
Well there was 4 1/2 inches of concrete all be it in two layers and a plastic membrane underneath with no insulation(wasn't to shocked about the insulation really) and no hardcore.
So i guess what i'm asking is do i rip up the floors completely and start again by putting in hardcore ,dpm, insulation and then concrete? Or do i leave well alone and put my money into wall insulation and new windows ?

single glazed windows ,thinking of going triple glazed if i dont have to re do the floors and thinking of dry lining the external walls.

definitely change the windows.. that would be my first port of call.

what is the wall construction currently? is it a cavity wall?
if so, is there insulation in there already... and what size cavity is left?

Its a 100mm cavity wall and i have already got it pumped with bonded bead and i got the attic insulated also.

regarding the floor, its a HUGE job to break out each individual floor, damp proof, insulate, concrete pour and screed.

I wouldnt see much change out of 10-15K for a standard 1500 sq ft bungalow.

Is it worth the extra cost to go triple given that the money could be better spent else where perhaps?

This would be my thoughts also. Why up the values of only part when other areas (floor) are like a sieve. I did this myself 2.5 years ago. Old house, redid the lot, floors included. Hacked them all out and put in new from hardcore up. Couldnt justify the spend on just wall and ceiling.

In fairness if there was one element that you could choose not to insulate then it would be the floor every time.

youll be surprised, when you price both. The difference in price is not as big as you might think. id price both.

How did you repair the DPM after you dug a hole through the floor?

just work off the uValue of the windows. The objective is to achive a low uValue irrespective of double or triple.

and as posted stated above, there is not a huge difference in any case between double and triple prices.

just recently done my own new build and put in Triple iwth uValue of 1.0
