Help with my first bet

Hi all, i am new to horse racing, i have being reading these boards the last couple of weeks, a friend in work has being explaining the different types of bets. I made the big step last night and created a bet365 account and i deposited 100 eu :)

I was talking to one of the reps and he told me to get my initial bonus i need to place bets equal to my initial deposit amount and they need to be at odds of 1/2 at least. So i am here asking for a favour, i know my first post and all but i want to do this right from the start and make the most of my money.

So i am here asking what should my first bet be to make the most of the inital bonus.Should i go for 1 big bet knowing i will get my bonus money to bet with if i lose, go small odds or big odds? So i am looking for a nice horse bet on either saturday or sunday, that i can watch and cheer on.

What do you think of the type of bet i should go for? and any suggestions on what i should bet on.

    Hey Ann Marie

My advice would be not to take any notice of your bonus. The reason they offer such nice looking bonuses is because it is unlikely you will actually get it.

Bet to win the races, not to get your bonus. It is not easy to pick winners. My best advice is to read as much as possible. Check out tipsters. Rossom who posts on this forum regularly has been quite successful with his tips since he began posting here.

There are many different bets you can do.
Backing to win - pays 1st place only
Each Way bet- Which means if you back something 10 euro each way, your total stake is 20 euro. If a horse comes first at 4/1 odds that you back each way you get paid 40 euro plus a quarter or a fifth of the odds for the place (this will be stipulated when you are placing the bet)
If the horse is placed eg 2nd, 3rd, or in some cases 4th. ( some races only pay 1st and 2nd place) You will get your stake times a quarter or a fifth the odds same as above.

Forecasting is picking the horses that come 1st and 2nd in a race eg Horse A and Horse B. Pays only if horses Finish Horse A first and Horse B Second.

A reverse forecast means they can Finish AB or BA .. Odds don't matter for forecast betting, you get paid a dividend. However if A and B are favourites the dividend will be small, if both A and B are longshots, the dividend can be huge. The dividend paid out for a forecast is then multiplied by your stake to calculate your winnings.

And lots of other bets you can read about.

I would be mega cautious when betting. There is no reason at all why you would win. The odds are against you. Unless you have plenty of money to lose, bet small and carefully. Read as much as possible. Rossom had a good post on how he picks horses, I can't find it off hand, but I would suggest your read through his posts.

I'd also suggest setting yourself a daily limit. EG if you have put 100 euro into your account, do you want bet everyday as a bit of fun? or occasionally? I have limit of about 20 euro a day just so I don't go overboard. But if I see a horse I really fancy coming up at the weekend, I don't bet for a few days. I never add more money. It's just being disciplined . It's very easy to chase loses by adding more and more. It doesn't work.

I enjoy racing, and watch racing even if I don't have a bet. If I had no money I would still watch.

Don't presume you will easily win.

Someone told me something that really stuck once, "To win a million in horse racing, start out with 10 million"

I don't want to put a dampner on your fun, but just want you to be realistic and beware of the fact that losing is much more of a likely outcome.

In your position I would be more inclined to bet on Football matches than horse racing..

its only for weekend bets really, will be heading off to some of the races at the weekends as well. The aim is to know what i am looking at, oh i dont expect to win much at all. I would say maybe 5 euro a bet at most is all i would be doing, its just fun and a reason to cheer louder.

John gosden and William Buick group 1 double
    Sat ascot 4.35
    Nathaniel 3/1
    Sun curragh 3.20
    Great heavens 2/1
Both should be in the thick of it anyway
I think they will both win relatively well
I also like caponata in the 2.10 at the curragh on Sunday too
There my 3 horses for the weekend so far anyway

Great Heavens is ridiculously under priced. I liked her for the last day but that was such a weak race

those bet365 bonuses have a time limit on them of three months or something like that. Like chris said, don't worry about the bonus, let the punds look after themselves. If you worry about a bonus coming up to the three month limit it will influence you and you might start making naive bets.

Have a bet but most of all enjoy the racing. If you don't understand racing, betting is one of the best ways to really understand it, when your invested, your interested.

I haven't had a bet in over a month and it took me a whole week to watch the Eclipse....I've been busy but still....its the Eclipse. Like I said enjoy the racing most of all. Good luck with your punting career!

Agnes Haddock didn't have any inside info. She won £688,620 for an outlay of £2......
