Cancelling Sky - what offers are you getting?

Just curious as to what offers people are getting when ringing up to cancel their subscription. I was on a half price sports pack offer which was due to expire in August so I rang up yesterday to cancel and the guy offered me 25% off for 12 months with multiroom free.

I was paying €44.50 for sports + basic pack (half price at €29.50) and €15 for multiroom so I've ended up now paying €44.25 which is 25% off the sports pack with free mutiroom which effectively means no change really in subscription cost.

Left Sky in January, they rang me there about an hour ago offering a half price deal for 9 months.

EDIT: I actually cancelled Sky on 24th May, and it finally went off on the 24th June. Don't know why I said January!

I started a thread last Febuary about cancelling Sky. I changed my mind at the end of the month and I looked for a discount. They wouldn't give me any because they said they replaced a new box in warranty the previous year.

I emailed the Sky support team twice and someone from the Executive Support Team phoned me twice. I got the following lines:

"Sky doesn't give out discounts like that"
"Generally people on those forums make that up"
"Many Sky customers are happy to stay with the same package forever"
"You have Sky World, I am afraid we can't even give you a discount on any package because you have everything"

To be honest I'm not the best negotiator so I stayed with them.

Then a couple of months ago I saw people posting that they were getting discounts again so I decided to switch to freesat.

When I cancelled (Cork) I was asked would I like to remove some packages - I said No.

She put me on hold and then offered me 25% for 12 months - I said No.

She put me on a longer hold again. She came back and offered me 50% for 6 months.

In background I could hear: "What!! He turned down 50%!!". I swear I could hear that person following off their chair!

I found it hard to give up Sky but that epsiode with customer service telling me that there no discounts was the last straw. I had Sky World + HD + MR. I had been with them for 6 years.

Freesat is very good but the true test will come when the football starts.

If you can hold off till september, youll probably get a letter offering half price everything for a year. My dad cancelled last July or so, and from September onwards have been getting an offer almost every month, took them up on it today!!

I phoned up last week to ask for Sky Sports to be taken off my package. I didn't get offered anything!

Rang (Cork) last week to 'cancel' Sky Sports and was offered an instant 20% discount for next 12 months on my overall package...

Rang Sky a few weeks ago to cancel Sky Sports and wasnt offered anything.

All they said was "ya, no problem, that will take 31 days" ....easy peasy! :D

My son rang in March and cancelled (sub expired in April) and no offer was made. He was fairly sure that they would ring him within a couple of weeks but they didn't.

When I rang last week the guy said he would give me 25% off for 12 months but the multiroom would remain at €15/month. As I was coming off a half price sports pack offer I told him I was trying to save money and not increase the monthly cost and unless he was going to give me the multiroom free he could proceed with cancelling my sub. He puts me on hold for a minute and comes back and gives me the usual crap about being a good customer etc and how they had the free multiroom on offer the month before blah de blah but ended up giving it to me free.

Called sky to cancel my movies and sports pack. Told them i get the sports on line and the movies on netflix. TBH its not really true but what the hell. I just fancied giving them an up yours knowing they give discounts left right and centre.

They offered me nothing.... Then.... i now get a call every second month or so offering me all types of package from 3 mnths movies to 12 months sports. The final straw came for me when a sales man knocked at my door and suggested i close my account and re open under my wifes pre marriage name.

This was kinda proof to me that they are under severe pressure.

So contacted eircom on this site. Knowing from there advertising they intend offering there own movies and sports packs in the near future and the rep confirmed this the case but did not have an exact date.

To be honest. I dont like the sales pitch sky adapts knowing all that goes on so i am hopeing to change to a combination of Netflix / Eircom / Aerial and free sats.....

However i believe if you cancel everything because your broke and can go a while without then you will get a call soon enough.

However there honestly is no proof as to my theory but we all know it happens.

I've had a succession of price reduction deals from Sky over the last 9 months or so..

November last year , rang to see if I could get a new sky box as the one i had was on it's last legs - Was looking for a std box which I used in Kids room.

They offered me a HD box for free with free HD for a year and movies free for 6 months (didn't have movies at that time) and got my Multi-room for free as I had Sports & Movies now - which meant I got HD & movies for less than I was originally paying.

That deal was due to expire in April , so rang in March to cancel 30 days in advance. This time they gave me a 50% reduction on Sports & Movies for 3 months which again meant my sub stayed the same..

Rang them last week to cancel Movies as I was 30 days out from the end of the 3 month deal.. They let me cancel Movies this time , but gave me a 25% reduction on the Sports package for 6 months so my sub has dropped.

I'll ring them in October to cancel the HD when that deal comes due for expiry and fully expect to be made an offer of some sort at that time.

I will say though , that I think the offers are region specific - When I got the 1st deal above, I told my Dad about it and he rang on the same day , he was told "That offer is not available in your area".

I live in a rural area on the West Coast , my father lives in East Coast (commuter belt area).

They are definitely getting hit from Saorview/FreeSat and I reckon that in Areas where previously Sky was the ONLY option (like me) but where now FreeSat is a viable alternative they are prepared to offer deals to keep you...Whereas in areas where you could have always left them and gone to UPC or whatever, they are less inclined to fight to keep you for whatever reason..

I called to cancel my entire package in April, was offered half price sports for 12 months and a €50 voucher, so said ok!
