Was looking at ours a couple of days ago, it's nearly 6 foot now. Sowed early and under plastic. Very happy with it. Any I've seen anywhere else is only half that height.

the earlier sown stuff is pretty up and down whereas the latter sown stuff is bang on uniform. I grow varieties suitable for grain as I'm only concerned about the cob as the rest of the plant is pretty useless so thankfully it doesn't look like its going to be a tall crop (something I hate). I find a smaller crop height will always result in bigger cobs as it doesn't put all its energy into growing bio-mass. Have two fields left to spray with N/b/mg but doubt I will be able to get through them now, past through them at the weekend and they were just over the bonnet of the tractor. Think maize will be our saviour this year as other forage crops look poor at best

Around here E.Waterford there's a lot of maize that won't be knee high on the 4th of August not to mind saying July. I grew maize for around 10 years early nineties to early noughties but just had to give up. My land was too high under the 300ft limit but close to the coast with the wrong aspect. Now grow WCWheat instead not as good as a good crop of maize but much more reliable.

Mine is green, will be lucky if it is knee high by 4th august. Has anyone on here ever topdressed it with N?

If the seat's wet, sit on yer hat, a cool head is better than a wet ar5e.

yip, used to do it around the 20th of Jun in a normal year with uncovered maize (last on couple bags of ASN) there would have being no N in the seedbed tough. How much N have you got on it already?? Maize needs very little N IMO and mine only gets around 60units per acre + some FYM/slurry, and grown on poor ground, I know guys putting on 140units an acre + slurry. Foliar N is your best option to give it a kick up the arse. Is it in the open or under cover

just after looking at my crop- 2fields one four acres and sown 15th may under plastic- 6ft tall and tossling

second field 19acres- 7acres of this was sown 24april- struggling at 4-5feet and tossling- the rest of the field 12acres sown 15may is knee high and yellow and pink- ground is saturated so plant cant take up oxygen and nutrients from soil. if there is no improvement in 2weeks ill bring in the plough.:(
