Independent Internship and Weekly J.A. payment

    Hi all,

I was just looking for some information on independent internships that are not affiliated with the jobbridge scheme. I've very recently graduated from college and am pursuing a masters degree which begins in October.

As a result of not being able to secure work this Summer, I signed on for Jobseekers Allowance. However, I've just secured an unpaid 3 month internship and was wondering if there's any way at all I can still keep the weekly social welfare payment while doing it? I will still be actively searching for paid work during the internship and would leave it if I got a paying job. Will I have to sign off or is there any way at all I can keep the payment?

Any info would be greatly appreciated:)

You could always ask but little likelihood that it would be acceptable. Outside of the JobBridge internships and work experience/internships which are integral part of courses for which BTEA is being paid, you cannot work, even for free, and get JSA. You can volunteer, details here http://www.welfare.ie/EN/Pages/JobseekersVoluntaryWorkOption.aspx but you'll note that there are strict guidelines as to which organizations you can volunteer with and on what basis etc.

Thanks for the info. My internship is in the public relations department of the Irish Cancer Society, which may or may not come under voluntary work related to sick people.

    Thank you:)

Is there any way that they could be asked to include the position in those W.P.P. Placements, - un-paid work experience placements with the aim to take some-one on and train them in the Role. A.f.a.I.k. there is 2 Categories; Non-College Applicants, and Graduate Applicants. I think they are usually either 6 Months or 9 Months, but maybe the Employer can decide the length/duration of the Work Placement. Have no idea what if anything an Employer gets out of this, so maybe where you want to work may not suit this "Initiative." But maybe you could ask? You would definitely have a genuine case to ask them about it.
