Hey guys, I just dropped a packet at Shaving.ie and ordered a Edwin Jagger Barley DE89BA11. Just at work now and looking at the razor and the handle seems rather short. This seems common in a lot of DE razors. I was looking at the Merkur 38C and Muhle R89 Grande but neither are really that much bigger (about a half an inch). I guess I'll get used to it.

Did this strike you as funny as well when you started?

My first was the Edwin Jagger DE89L, and when it first arrived I thought I accidentally ordered a miniature version.

You're just so used to the oversized plastic ones that it appears short but using proper technique you'll notice that the handle is the perfect size for it, doesn't take much getting used to.

Yeah, it seems pretty standard for these razors to have a shorter handle. I feel like I've opened the lid on a whole sub-culture having discovered so many options, die-hard fans, products, and websites.

It is a funny thing how I never took notice that there might be a solution to the skin irritation I've taken for granted as being part of shaving. As such I have only shaved twice a week for years and being scruffy has become part of my persona. That said, the thought of no more irritation or being able to shave more than twice a week sounds great. I've been obsessing on all the products available which is a bit overwealming.

It does become a problem, I'm bearded and have considered shaving it all off just so I'd have more face to shave. And wishing my stubble would grow faster so I could shave more often when I wanted to practice techniques or use new soap etc. It's been just over a year since I started and I couldn't go back.

Make sure and have the shave after a bath or shower. If not get a very hot towel and place it on your beard area. It will help.

I was doubtful after my first. Even more doubtful when I ripped the face off myself after another couple of attempts. But it didn't take long to get the hang of it.

Had my first DE shave last night. I hadn't shaved since Monday and have a thick beard. So I was pretty careful not to go overboard, one pass probably repeating a bit. Used a Derby blade and caught a glipse at how good this might be after a few months.

    1. I never shower first but did tonight. Window fogged up despite window open and vents on. I think I'll stick with shaving first and showering after. Think I'd like to at least try preparing with Kyle's method for 1 minute.
    2. Proraso is strong stuff! My eyes are sensitive and the fumes from Proraso affected me. Does smell lovely and clean tho. Verdict still out.
    3. Love the accuracy for shaving a clean line beneath sideburns and ultimately goatee as I get more confident.
    4. Omega shaving cream and new Muhel pure badger brush worked really well. Got up a great lather in a minute. Watching mantic59 and geofatboy on youtube I could do much better.

So, shave was as good as Mach3... no doubt there. I think I need to slow down and trasition from a 2-3 minute shave to a full wet-shave and will need to learn to slow down.

I also may have some post-shave tuning to do. I've ordered a alum block and Proraso balm today. Following geofatboy I plan to rinse, alum, rinse, proraso green, proraso balm. I may drop the proraso green if it affects my eyes too much. Next time I'll concentrate it on my neck.

Funny as it sounds, I did my second shave this morning. Since my beard was so heavy and I was so cautious, I decided I needed a little cleaning up this morning. I took my time, about 20 minutes.
1.Used Muhle sandlewood soap instead of the Omega cream this time. Got my water right and got a great lather - meringue!
2.Lathered up and did hot towel - brilliant!
3.Proraso didn't bother my eyes today - must have slathered way too much on. Of course, I also didn't bother putting it on preshave today (see #1)
4.Away for weekend so had to tidy goatee with new razor. I'm a bit shorn but it turned out ok. Need improvement there. But no irritation which is great considering minimal lather to see what I was doing!
5.Found some Burt Bees aftershave balm I used after the Proraso. Seemed to make a nice combination. I think I smell pretty good!
6.Alum block and Proraso balm arrived in post this morning (just ordered yesterday afternoon!) so more things to try
