I definately find a 32g 5 or 6 to be the best for shooting them. I was using 28g trap cartridges for a while last year, but spent alot of time chasing after wounded birds!! when they're hit with a 32 they go down without a kick and theres only a euro or two in the difference between 28's and 32's, I picked up some 32g FOB 6's there for €7 a box last week which is good going for 32g:D:D

30g are good enough... no real difference in price so I just go with the extra 2 grammes of lead :D:D:D

    Eley 30g 6's and I have a few slabs of 30g, 6.5's.
I shoot Gamebore clear pigeon 30g when available.
    Wary birds at 50 yds. or thereabouts, 32 & 34g, 6's & sometimes 5's.

    was quoted €75 to €80 for 250 qc 32gram No6.
    and €50 for 250 trap 28gram No7 1/2.
will go the extra few quid i think for the heavier load.

I still believe your better off paying the extra money for the heavier load... If you have the funds available that is:D:D

Sorry lads but slightly off topic here, as you are shooting pidgeons over a crop do you need to apply for a Section 42 or can you just go at it?
    Thanks

You can shoot them under derogation over crops all year around if they are causing damage.. you dont need to apply for a section 42.

I always used trap cartridges but changed to 5's for pigeons and crows a few years ago and sorry I didn do it sooner whacked anything clean...best option is to get a few different boxs and see which you prefer as everyone is slightly different..I'm getting used to to a rifle at the moment iv been threw two types so far and going to get more to try today

was out yesterday and was using a mixture of rc sipe 32gr 5 , saga 32 gr 7, eley high flyers 32gr 7, and eley olympics 28 gr 7 1\2 found the 32 gr 5s to be the most versatile and the 32 gr 7s especially the saga were savage the trap carts mostly done the job within 30 yards but were really inconsistant more often than i liked ya could here the pellets hop off of the birds only to see them fly away other times they flew a bit and then dropped now winged a few with the other carts but that was bad shooting so as a middle ground i think a 7 in the first barrel with half choke and a 5 or 6 in the second with half or three quater choke would suit my shooting best

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 135 ✭✭sako75 hunter

Ive been shooting RC Sipe 32g 6's since last year and can honestly say ive never shot any better cartridges out of my shotgun. About 65-70 a slab, quality! All i can say is give them a try, you wont be sorry :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,147 ✭✭✭dev110

I have changed away from the trap cartridges also. Same as Snipe I find they just bounce off the pigeons from time to time.

I am using Remington Sure Shot 34g 6's. Anything I have hit with them never budged after. Had a few 50-60 yard shots yesterday and they went down. If I was using 7 1/2's I wouldn't have even tried.

The 28g are only any good if the pigeons/crows are coming in at about tree height. We often use them shooting crows and its basically a waiting game for them to drop lower. If they are any more than 25-30 yards away or high up tis fairly hopeless.

The 32g 6 fairly increases the knocking distance and would be a decent minimum if you had to put a serious dent in the numbers.

Have tried RC20 semi magnum 32g No5. Bit heavy going after a while.

Have bought a heap of Eley Alphamax AAA 28 gramme, would they be any good for foxes?

Wouldnt think they'd be any good on foxs... a 12g 36 gramme BB doesnt always do the job either ( depending on range ). I found a 42g magnum BB to be the best for em!

But the AAA shot diameter is 5.16mm and there are 35 per 28gram
The BB shot diameter is 4.09mm and there are 70 per 28 gram

The AAA must be hard hitting - what would the best use be for AAA 28gram?

They may be smaller but there will be nearly double in the BB.

The AAA will work i'd imagine if they were at very close range, like every shotgun cart its all bout using the right range.

I agree Garv...its all about getting the right range.... I sometimes use 24g eley olympics on pigeons if im gonna have a couple for the pan. Let them in nearly on top of the decoys and there isnt a kick out of em:D

What do people think about using clay pigeon cartridges in the field??. I bumped into this chap at the local clay club recently and he said he uses them at ranges out to 50 -60 yards. I'm not convinced personally, though the fact that they can be significantly cheaper to purchase is an obvious attraction.

Don't bother with 7 1/2 28 gram. They are for targets. The lead is harder so if your familiar with rifle shooting it's like using a solid bullet instead of a hollow point. Hunting shot is soft so it expands when it hits the target. Sure, 7 1/2 28 gram will kill them if they're close enough but how close? It'll kill a bear at 2 inches it doesn't mean it's suitable.

Get 32 gram no 5 or 6, consider no4 too. It's also important to try different cartridges to see which works best for you. Shotguns have different chamber lengths and diameters so they will favor different cartridges. There's a reason people have different opinions on the best brand of cartridge.

He definitely has no idea of the range or is telling porkies.. He might knock butterflies at that range with them.

As I said above they aren't much good above tree height to get a clean kill.

we were shooting pigeons before only to bag a few for the pot and were using them to bag a few without much damage and a crow flew over and the lad I with shot him at about 35-40 yards and the crow flew off. He was saying he was sure he hit him well and about 400 yards away the crow flopped in mid air. I didnt believe him till he went off up the field and came back a few minutes later with the crow.

A tight choke might give them more stopping power at range but not much id say

Tripple A patterns nice for goose or similar sized, also a splendid round for home protection - and also is great for Mr for fox if you use an extra full turkey choke!

Anything apart from ducks, 6,5,4 alphamax 36gr - 3/4 choke - beratta semi auto. Duck's get BB's end of.

Seriously bbs for ducks what ducks are you shooting at ? The mighty ducks ! It seems a bit extreme any 32g 5 cartridge is more that enough for duck or a 4 !
