    The Philadelphia Flyers have signed defenceman Shea Weber to a 14-year offer sheet worth upwards of $100 million.

    The Nashville Predators have seven days to match the offer if they wish to retain Weber's services.

    The 26-year-old remained a restricted free agent after failing to come to an agreement with the Predators when his one-year $7.5 million deal awarded through arbitration, expired after the season.

    Compensation in the form of draft picks for the Predators should they choose not to match the Flyers offer is tied to the average per year cap hit of the offer sheet. It is expected the Predators would receive either four first round draft picks or two first round picks, one second and one third from the Flyers.

    Someone was going to eventually make him an offer. It's not surprising that it ended up being Philadelphia.

    Looks like this is the end of the Chris Pronger era.

    They can match the offer. It just doesn't make sense to pay more for one player than what the team cost.

    PREDATORS MATCH FLYERS' 14-YEAR, $110M OFFER SHEET FOR WEBER

    The Nashville Predators announced Tuesday that they have matched the Philadelphia Flyers' 14-year, $110 million offer sheet for defenceman Shea Weber.

    The Flyers signed Weber to the offer sheet - which includes $68 million in bonus money in the first six years - last week. In total, Weber will make $14 million in each of the first four years; $12 million in years five and six; $6 million in each of the next four seasons; $3 million in year 11; and $1 million in each of the remaining years.

    "The decision to enter into the largest contract in franchise history was made by all parts of the organization, including ownership, hockey operations and business operations," read a team statement issued on Tuesday afternoon.

    The game winning puck from Game Six in Philadelphia was picked up by the linesman. I watched him do it as I stood in the last row of the Wachovia Center in disbelief (that the Hawks actually won).

    why do these 10+ year contracts exist ? Its damn crazy committing so much to a player who could go cold or slow down in 2 years time.

    They are generally, heavily front loaded where the player will see the majority of the money in the first few years. They are very rarely given to any 'older players. With the example of Shea Weber only being 26 years old and he will receive $68 million in the first six years of the contract.
