Tyre choice

I have a Toyota Corolla with the crap cheap Chinese brand tyres that were on it when I got it a couple of months ago.
A couple of weeks ago I entered a roundabout in the rain and spun around, I was lucky as I did not hit the roundabout and the cars behind were a good distance behind me so no harm done, I get wheel spin moving away and the car slips and slices around the place unless the road is bone dry.

My question is what tyres should I put on it ?
will all-weather tires do or should I try hold off for a while and get winter tyres ? How early can I use winter tyres ?

winter types are only good for winter.

the way I have it is at the moment my car has 4 alloys on it all with bridgestone t001 on all corners. (I think they saved me very well when I drove way too fast through a good few inches of water. car bearly turned thanks to these.

was told if they had being carp tyres it would've being a lot worse.

I also have another set of alloys sitting by waiting to be used with winter tyres on them.

sadly didn't get a good chance to use these in snow but when I did hit a patch of ice on a roundabout going a bit too fast butility they held very well.

you could always go all weather types which would work well but I have no experience of these

Taking into account that your current tires barely keep you on the road, i can't see how you can hold off for a WHILE and get WINTER tires...

Just get decent set of tires now, and don't worry about winter now.
You will drive on all-season tires all year in Ireland.

You don't need to spend a fortune to get much better tyres than you have now,

Brands like kumho, falken, toyo would give you miles better grip than what you describe.

    One word "Hankook"
    Great value tyre.
    Good grip.
    Good wearing,
Have them on the front of my car and cannot feel any difference between them and the original Bridgestones that were on it.

How many miles do you typically get out of a set of tyres? I just replaced mine last week and I think I had them for 27,000 kms. Just wondering if I was taking the p*ss.

My wife's car had a set of Triangle (ie crap) tyres on it when we got it. The thread depths were perfect but the grip was atrocious. I changed them for a set of Vredesteins a week or two ago and the difference is huge even the wife notices and she's no Sabine Schmitz.
I've always had Vredesteins on my own cars, I love their wet weather grip, they are not hugely expensive either.

+1 on the Vredesteins. I has a set of Ultrac Sessantas up front on my GT and the grip was unreal. Very predictable tyre. The only downside is that due to the high end grip it means it had a lower rubber compound and I got only got 13k kilometres before they were just on the legal limit :( I have recently went for a set of cheaper Avon ZZ3s. So far so good.

Thanks guys, think I go for a set of all season tyres. anything would be better than what I have now.

    Hankook.
You simply cannot go wrong with them.

    Vredestein + Corolla = Overkill :D

I've had the Michelin Primacy HP on my car twice and the Michelin Energy Saver on it once. Both superb tyres with a long life span. The grip on them is really good.

They range from around €100 to €140 per tyre, but they are worth. Last ages, great grip and they are very safe. Might as well spend a bit of money on something that might save your life...

    Hankook is better than Vredestein.
I had the Sessanta for the last 10.000 km or so and they are dead already. I had them on the rear, propulsion car, they did not last long at all. The Sesanta wet rating is only C too. The traction control was kicking very often in the wet. Even right after I fitted them.
I am now running Hankook 110 V12 Evo. They are much more confortable and the traction control no longer kicks in the wet.
Now if you have a small engined car I suppose the Sasanta will do. But the wet performance is extremelly important here.

I've had different experiences to you. When I had my Prelude it came with Hankooks (can't remember which model) which were a good tyre but I later replaced them with Vredestein tyres I think they were Sportracs (but I can't be 100% certain) and preferred them.
I suppose the range of quality within a manufacturer can vary too.

Yeah depends of the model too obviously

The prices you quoted... what sizes they referred to?
I believe OP can get decent tires for less than that - assuming it is no bigger than 14-15"?

I have vredestein sessantas at the minute and they never skipped and beat, even when being pushed hard in my heavy car and in the wet etc.
I was actually thinking of trying the hankooks next just to see, especially as they are cheaper :)

Sorry... yeah.. that was for 16" wheels... 205/55/16

What brand tyres are on it OP, for future reference.

I grabbed some cheap 19" used wheels for my brother with 3x new tyres on them. All of them different Chinese brands (IRC, Suntekk and F150 and something else).. all went into bin immediately. Pity though as they had full thread depth.

Bought my car in September, tyres weren't new but probably hadn't a huge amount done (maybe 3/4k miles). Have driven 14500 miles since and they still have a bit left! Front ones are getting towards the point that I might think about changing them soon, so might piggy back on this and ask what type of tyres people would suggest and the general going rate? I know very little about tyres!

It's an 04 100HP Bora, size (I think) is 195/65 R15. Don't do anything wild with my car but like to get where I'm going at a good pace generally! Not sure what are on it at the minute actually, but have never given me any pants-****ting moments, so will check next time I'm near it!

Yeah sure but you are omiting to say what car is it, which train the tyres are and if the car is traction, propulsion...it is all down to HP and torque.
On high power cars those tyres simply dont last and arent great in the wet.

Uniroyal Rainsport 2 are renowned for having exceptional wet weather grip, which is pretty much a year round necessity in Ireland. They're fairly reasonably priced too.

My vote goes for Uniroyal. I had Rain Expert once and the grip on wet and even in snow was far beyond any other tyre I had before, including Pirelli, Dunlop, Kumho etc.

    It's a noisy tyre howewer

Timely topic, looking for a set of tyres for my Insignia, same wheels as this one:

    http://m.carzone.ie/usedcars/index.cfm?fuseaction=car&carID=26313425117408320

How much would you be looking at for a set & also any recommendations for places to buy? Live in Dublin but I'm from Wexford & my wife is from Kilkenny so we're up & down a good bit.

    Thanks in advance

My niece has an insignia elite and I put her on to Hankooks. She fitted them and find them excellent.

    Sound, size is 245/45 R18 45

Did a google search & an Askaboutmoney thread suggested Dave McCann in D15. There's also a discount tyre place in the same business park. Anyone any experience of either?

Bridgestone that are on them at the moment, I'm assuming I won't do much better than them for a good all round tyre??

I have seen Dave McCann being mentioned on this forum and another motor forum and he seems to have a really good rep. The place I use in Blanch is Discount Tyres and Auto, they are up in the Rosemount ind estate and pretty sound guys in there. Prices seem a bit more expensive at first then compared to eiretyres or catskill, but when you factor in delivery and going to another place to have them fitted i didn't find much of a difference in price in all.

    Apologises 245/45 R18 96W

only one quote back do far:

    Hancook 227 each
    Uniroyal Rain Sport 219 each
    Bridgestone 212 each

All include supply, fitting with valve & balancing. Any thoughts? Gonna ring a few places this afternoon if I can get a chance.

If you do ring discount tyres and auto in blanch ask to speak to Dave in reception and tell him the other quotes you got and he may be able to do a good price. I got a few quid off the 2 tyres I got last week.

As for the tyres themselves I don't have any experience with them. You should look at some of the commentaries on some of the tyre reviews websites. I find they helped my decision.

    Which Hankook's were they?

Uniroyals are very soft sidewall and can get "stabbed" easily

Bridgestones? I had 050's on my car when I bought it. Very noisy.. Decent grip though.
Have the Hankooks now and am happy with them
