    Sadly a catch 22 situation, we know about these things because they become exposed, but exposure means that the elements can destroy them.

    There must have been millions of fossils and the like lost over time by elemental destruction.

    that place in Britain where prehistoric foot prints are exposed in the mud by the tide, and get washed away a few tides later

    Then again all coal, chalk and limestone contain lots of fossils
    and in the case of coal machines mean a miner is far less likely to spot something interesting

    are there fossils in the banded iron formations ?
