so the car failed on 2 front bald tyres. im told to come back within 30 days once replaced. can you tell me if this is a visual inspection outside of if they have to put them on the ramp when i go back for a proper look?

perhaps a stupid question, i suppose theyll prob just look at the tyres, see theyre brand new and print me out my disc?

    thanks

Its just a visual retest, no booking needed or fee to be paid.

    What he said.
Failed on two rear tires recently, had to come back for visual retest, was free and done and dusted in 5 minutes.
They actually check all 4 tires, just in case some smart-arse just switches them round, hoping they will only look at the failed tires.

I've seen em Mark the Bad ones too.

Tyres don't have to be new OP, they just have to have the legal thread depth.

Also anyone know if i need my log book tomorrow to do my NCT ? Misplaced it and have NCT after work on the poor old Octavia

Tyres can be bought quite cheap in car dismantlers and I bought one for €25 on tyresavers.ie lately in Oulart

i asked about the logbook and license today.

if you dont have the logbook? no problem.
if you dont have driving license or passport? they will let you do the test but wont give you the disc until you come back with the id.

thanks for the answers on the tyres lads.

Ahh thanks OP, also if buying part used tyres make sure and inspect the sidewall carefully and make sure tyre doesn't look cracked like its been sitting in the weather for over a year.

I don't want to sound like a patronizing cnut but I probably will anyway...

It should be just a visual, but...

...how on earth did it escape your attention that your tires were bald before going to an NCT?

Also that piece of advise to get some cheap piece of cr*p from a dismantler...the tires are your connection to the road. Enough said.

Don't go with cr*p on tires and brakes. Might have forgotten something but those really are essentials.

You're the only person to mention cheap piece of crap....

Never cheap out on tires, agree 100% with that, doesn't have to be the most expensive, but cheap crap can land you in the ditch.
In my case I had the NCT booked and I knew the tires would fail. But there was the mortgage to pay, electricity, car tax and I was wiped out, so had to wait with tires till next pay-day, but it was too late to change the date.
So had to take the test, knowing I would fail on tires but retest would be free.
Got tires a week later (after getting paid), went back, passed, got my cert.
Some of us are holding on for dear life with bills, have a nice, messy pile of them sitting on my desk, looking at me right now.

    Can't mechanic test emissions?
