Black Pudding

I couldn't find another thread so i'll start a new one. I'm looking for a tastey, readily available black pudding. I'm deep frying some as part of a come dine with me night with friends. I don't have time to try too many types, I have tried shaws but I think there's too much cereal in it and very little flavour too, also I prefer no cereal.

I'm going to serve it with home made onion marmalade. Any suggestions? If there is a supermarket brand that might do, great! But if there is any specialist maker that I can get some off ( and is tasty) better. I'm in Tullamore.

Clonakilty pudding is the best ! Should be easy enough to get, Tesco's and Superquinn stock it.

Not sure where you are based, but if you are anywhere near the south grab yourself some of this stuff. Best I've ever tasted

I've switched to Aldi's black pudding over the last few months (along with their excellent sausages and smoked streaky bacon rashers). Very nice.......

I had a similar dilemma. Thread here.

I ended up taking the kellys pudding with me, not as much cereal in it as clonakilty. But a seriously tasty black pudding all the same.

Beirgen Butcher Shop, Edenderry, Offaly, seems to be closest stockest of Kellys to you.

Is that the stuff from Mayo? I think The Pork Shop in Athlone sell that?

Agree with this, taste wise anyway. But it tends to fall apart quite easily. So actually tend to get Shaws more often than not.

THat's what I love about it! I love soft puddings but then I know for some recipes that can be a bit annoying for presentation purposes:pac: If it's just for a good aul fry up who cares:D

With post number 3000 of my illustrious boards career, I will present you with the answer: Granby Black Pudding.

It is by far the nicest widespread black pudding that I have tried. And I've tried loads of them.

But it's getting tougher to find although you might still get it in your local supermarket. It's the business and much nicer than Rudd's or Clonakilty in my humble opinion. If you look through other threads on boards on the subject you'll see it recommended.

By the way, if anyone ever finds themselves in Argentina try some Morcilla. It is their version of black pudding and it is damn tasty. Preferably with a nice big juicy steak.

I'd also go for Rudds..... both their Black and White puddings are very tasty...

You don't need to go to Argentina, I have bought Spanish Morcilla here from The Real Olive Company.
Its good but not Black Pudding the way I know it.
I don't like Clonakilty, its too greasy.

    loughnanes is the best

I;m not a great lover of black pudding (prefer white) but there is a butcher place in oughterard in Galway who are selling award winning black pudding. I bought it one day to try it out - I've never tasted anything like it - it is a smoked Black Pudding and it is out of this world.

The trick is to dry fry it - that way you don't add any more fat a some of the fat in it renders out.

Fried in oil (like my dad does) it is pretty greasy alright!!

Personal favorite black puddings are the Hodges Gluten free - They tend to be a damn sight better than any of the other 'off the shelf' puddings, and can be bought in most Tesco and Dunnes. I found them after giving up gluten, and would never look back.

Try a gluten free black pudding, no cereal.

McGeoughs - and they deliver nation wide, they are without doubt my favorite

Hicks black pudding, by a mile. Think its only available in Dublin (although pretty widespread) and doesn't taste like any other pudding, comes in a square block.

I've never seen it. Where do you get it?

My favorites are Ashes of Anascaul in Kerry and Jack McCarthy's of Kanturk

    Olhausen black pudding was fantastic.
Is it being made again, now that the Olhausen brand has been bought and relaunched?

Jack McCarthy's of Kanturk is the best hands down ... they have won awards across Europe & Ireland for their Boudain Black pudding ... the kanturk cream must be the secret... search for them on google and they deliver too

Boil some prawns and let them go cold, get a black and a white pudding, not one of the well known brands any will do as long as its a bit moist. The ones wrapped in plastic are fine.Chop the prawns finely mash the puddings and the prawns together (puddings not cooked) add a dash of reggae reggae sauce or whatever sauce one likes and mix well place the mix in a microwave for a minute or two.Place on tuc or similiar or small pieces of bread roll and serve as appetisers-unreal.

Interesting, had you been smoking something before you came up with that particular recipe?:p

A nice pudding alright but tis very salty.

I reckon a (slightly) reduced salt version of J. Mc's would be my perfect pudding.

Kellys of Newport do a damn fine puddin', to the point where he has been inducted into the Confrérie des Chevaliers du Goute-Boudin in Normandy. They had a parade for him in Newport and everything!

That idea with the puddings and prawns intrigues me. I might actually try it...
