How to get started writing

I love writing fiction, and semi-fiction, and poetry. Is there anyway I can make a living from writing fiction? Any suggestions on how to get started? Or will I have to just get some job that is closest to writing, creatively, and do the writing on the side?

    thanks.

Really, it depends on how good you are, and how committed. It is certainly possible to make a living writing features for newspaper and magazines, even if you are not particularly talented.

Not implying you are not talented, but a good accurate, punctual writer will always be in work.

It is also possible to make a living writing books, but it takes a lot longer to build up to the point where you can live on your writing. The rule of thumb is six books in print before you can quit the day job, and most first books never sell.
