    Hi Guys,

Ive a 12 yearold immersion and up until about 2 years ago i could easily get 2 or 3 showers out my cylinder in the morning.

Now i barely get 20 mins before the water is cold (even when i leave the immersion on all night)

We have also gone from €80 per month electric bill to approx €150.

    Any ideas lads

As far as i can tell ive 1 element in the top of the cylinder and the water is really hot from the taps before the shower

    thanks

    Mark

Probably only half of element is working, as in sink/bath. You will need a new element, had to get one myself last week, not that expensive.

A friend of mine had a similar problem lately. The cause in his case was a large build up of limescale on the inside walls of the cylinder which actually reduced the available space for hot water. He ended up replacing the cylinder.

Have a look at the linked video, will explain all you need to know about thermostats (a bit drawn out, keep watching!)

THanks for that guys I think I will replace both the element and thermostat and check inside the cylinder for limescale.

    cheers

Must have been some amount of lime scale. I've only ever seen them coated and no where near enough to effect capacity

WHats best to treat the limescale in the cylinder rather than replace as they cost a fortune?

    thanks

Apart from a water softener not much. If a cylinder is fitted in a hard water area it should have a sacrificial anode inside. It's a rod that installed through a port on the top or side of the cylinder. The limescale is attracted to this instead of the cylinder, they have a life span of about 2 to 3 years. You can also get immersion heaters that have them attached to them.
