Frankfurt Connection

Hi, I'm looking at a flight to cairo via frankfurt with a 12 hour layover. It says on skyscanner that you 'connect in airport' which is obvious. I'm just wondering if anyone knows if this rules out the option of being able to catch a train into frankfurt for a few hours which i'd be very interested in doing or am I restricted to staying in the departures area for 12 hours which I would want to avoid? Thanks in advance....

Yes you can head into Frankfurt, I've done this before albeit headed to Mainz in the other direction to kill time.

Assuming it's a Lufthansa connection and you have both boarding cards with bags connected straight through to Cairo, then it's easy.

even if needing to check in again, theres a left luggage at the airport right by the rail link so you can potter about town without lugging your cases with you.

I did it myself one of the times I connected in Frankfurt airport.

Mainz or Frankfurt is definitely worth visiting and it should not be a problem with a long layover. As long as you don't have any passport or visa issues with exiting the airport in Germany (assuming you hold an EU passport). You'll have to go through security again (x-ray, no liquids and such) of course.

Mainz was a bit more fun to hang about in my opinion, but Frankfurt is also worth seeing even if most of the "historic" buildings were completely rebuilt after WWII. The train (S-Bahn) goes right to the airport and rail transit in Germany is easy and efficient as you probably know.
